After the Santa Eulària Ibiza Marathon: Ses Salines

The Route: Santa Eulària → Ses Salines → Ibiza Airport or Santa Eulària Logistics: Hire car, about 35 minutes south. Flat tracks and beach. Works well on the day of a flight home. Marathon Month: April Duration: Day trip

Santa Eulària ──(about 35 mins by car)──> Ses Salines ──(about 10 mins)──> Ibiza Airport (IBZ)

The Santa Eulària Ibiza Marathon climbs through the middle of the island. The south, around the salt pans of Ses Salines, is the flattest part of Ibiza, and it sits right beside the airport, which makes it a good last morning before a flight.

April at Ses Salines is the quiet season. The beach bars that fill the sand in summer are closed or only starting up, the protected dunes are empty, and in most springs birds use the salt pans on migration: greater flamingos are often seen on the shallow water, along with egrets and waders, though numbers vary. The sea is still too cool for most swimmers.

A car is the easiest way to get here. The drive from Santa Eulària takes about 35 minutes, and there is parking near the main beaches. Buses serve the beach in summer; out of season, check the current timetable first.

The salt pans

The salt works were started by the Phoenicians and are still in use. The shallow rectangular pans stretch across the flat land between the airport and the sea, and the road through them is level. The church of Sant Francesc de s'Estany, a small whitewashed chapel beside the pans, stands among the salt workers' houses. The pans are part of the Ses Salines Natural Park, which also covers the southern tip of Ibiza and the north of Formentera.

The beaches

Platja de ses Salines is a long, sandy beach backed by pine and dunes, and the walk along the shoreline is completely flat, on firm sand near the water. At the southern end, a path leads to the old watchtower at Punta de ses Portes, over rock and sand. To the east, Es Cavallet is a similar long beach reached by a boardwalk over the dunes.

Keep to the marked paths through the dunes, which are protected.

From here, Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is about 10 minutes by car. Allow time to return a hire car.
