After the São Paulo City Marathon: Embu das Artes
The Route: São Paulo hotel → Vila Sônia → Embu das Artes → São Paulo hotel Logistics: Take the Metro to Vila Sônia, then EMTU bus line 033. The whole line takes about 80 minutes end to end, so allow most of that from the terminal to the town centre and back. Marathon Month: July Duration: 1 day

The Monday after a July marathon is a poor day for São Paulo's museums. MASP and the Museu do Futebol are shut, and a cross-city dash to anything else costs more than tired quadriceps can pay. Embu das Artes asks for less. It is a small town of craft shops and artists' studios beyond the western edge of the city, and most of it can be seen on foot at the speed of a person descending stairs backwards.
July in Embu das Artes: July is dry season and winter. Days are mild and often bright, evenings are cool, and a light jacket is enough. Rain is uncommon but not impossible.
Getting There
Take the Metro to Vila Sônia, the western terminus of Line 4 Yellow, and follow the signs to the bus platforms. EMTU line 033 runs to Embu das Artes, and the full run takes about 80 minutes. Check the current timetable and fare at the terminal, because intermunicipal services are outside the city's Sunday free-bus policy. Aim to leave your hotel by 09:30 so that you arrive while the shops are opening.
The Day
The old centre is arranged around Largo 21 de Abril, a small square of low whitewashed buildings that hold craft shops, furniture workshops and studios selling ceramics, carved wood and paintings. Opening hours vary by shop, and the larger weekend craft fair is not a Monday event, so expect a quieter town than the one in most photographs. That suits a body that has just run 42.2 km.
The walking is short and mostly level around the square, with a few cobbled and sloping side streets. Take the descents slowly. Bargaining is normal in craft shops, but asking prices on small pieces are usually modest, so do it gently.
Check the opening hours of the Museu de Arte Sacra dos Jesuítas, a small museum in the old mission church, before you go, since small museums in Brazil often close on Mondays.
Where to Eat
Restaurants around the square serve Brazilian food at weekday prices. Lunch is a sit-down affair, and nobody will mind you taking an hour and a half over it. Ask for the dish of the day, and check which places are open on a Monday, since some close after the weekend.
Where to Stay
This is a day trip, so keep your São Paulo hotel. The three 2026 partner hotels are Quality Suites Oscar Freire, Transamerica Executive Bela Cintra and Transamerica Executive Perdizes. Another base that works for Vila Sônia is the ibis Styles São Paulo Faria Lima in Pinheiros, which is on the western side of the city.
Getting Home
Allow the full 80 minutes back, plus Metro time, and aim to be on the bus by 16:30 so that you reach your hotel before the evening rush. Buses back are not frequent after dark, so check the last departure before you settle into dinner.
