After the São Paulo Marathon: A Recovery Day in Ibirapuera
The Route: Hotel → Parque Ibirapuera → seated lunch → Hotel Logistics: On foot or a short taxi from a hotel near the park. Leave luggage at the hotel by agreement. Marathon Month: April Duration: Day trip
Hotel ──(short walk or taxi)──> Parque Ibirapuera ──> Seated lunch ──> Hotel
The São Paulo Marathon starts and finishes beside the Obelisk at the edge of Parque Ibirapuera, and most of the race is run on city streets, a bridge and a university campus. On Monday the park is a quieter place to walk, and it is close enough to a hotel that you will not need a long transfer.
April in São Paulo: Autumn. Days are usually mild, with a chance of showers, and evenings can be cool. Bring a light layer and a waterproof, and check the forecast the evening before.
MASP is closed on Mondays and requires online booking, so it does not suit the first recovery day. Keep the museum for a Tuesday or for the days before the race. Check any other museum's closing day before you go.
The park walk
The park has wide paved paths, and most are flat or gently sloping. A short loop of twenty or thirty minutes is enough. Sit on a bench when your legs ask, and avoid stairs and ramps where you can. The race arena may still be dismantled near the Obelisk, so follow signs and keep to the public paths.
Lunch
Choose a seated lunch. Jardineira Grill serves a rodízio on Avenida dos Bandeirantes and lists Sunday hours, but check Monday opening before you travel. Ask your hotel for a nearby alternative, since a short walk or taxi is better than a long transfer.
Pacing the day
Keep the plan short: one walk, one meal and a rest. Stairs are harder than they look on the day after a marathon, so use lifts where they exist. Drink water through the afternoon. If rain arrives, move the walk indoors and take a long lunch instead.
A late checkout is worth asking for before the race, since a slow Sunday finish can leave little time to shower and pack. If you are flying on Monday, give yourself plenty of time to reach the airport, since traffic in a large city is unpredictable.
