Mostar sits around 129 km from Sarajevo, a two-hour journey by either the twice-daily Bosnian Talgo train or a direct bus, both running through the Neretva valley's limestone gorge scenery for a fair share of the trip. April puts the visit ahead of the town's busiest summer tour-group crowds, with mild weather suited to the old town's uneven stone streets, worth pacing sensibly on legs still recovering from the marathon rather than covered at speed.

The train is the marginally faster and more comfortable option of the two, air-conditioned throughout the full 129 km run.

Stari Most

Stari Most, the town's defining Ottoman-era stone bridge, was completely destroyed during the 1993 conflict and rebuilt using original 16th-century construction techniques, reopening in 2004 with UNESCO World Heritage status following soon after. Local divers perform jumps from the bridge's parapet into the Neretva below throughout the day, a long-standing local tradition rather than a staged tourist show, though the bridge's own steep stone steps demand careful footing regardless of whether a jump is happening.

The Old Bazaar

Kujundžiluk, the old bazaar street running up from the bridge on the eastern bank, is lined with copper and metalwork craft shops in the same tradition the street is named for, alongside the newer souvenir trade the bridge's fame now draws. The street is cobbled and slopes upward from the water, manageable walking but not perfectly flat, worth knowing in advance for legs still easing back into movement.

Where to Eat

Restaurants on both riverbanks serve Bosnian coffee and ćevapi within sight of the bridge itself, a reasonable lunch stop with the bridge as the obvious backdrop regardless of which side is chosen.

Getting Back

Return by the same direct train or bus service to Sarajevo. Check the current timetable before leaving Mostar, since the train in particular runs only twice daily.
