After the Sarajevo Marathon: Mostar Overnight

Mostar works well enough as a day trip (see the companion day-trip itinerary), but staying a single night changes the experience of Stari Most itself: by early evening, once the day's tour coaches have left for Dubrovnik or back to Sarajevo, the bridge and its surrounding streets settle into something much closer to an ordinary small Bosnian town than the crowded midday version most visitors see. An overnight stay also opens up the Kravice waterfalls, a worthwhile addition that a same-day round trip from Sarajevo does not comfortably allow time for.

Night One: Stari Most at Dusk

Arriving by the early-to-mid-afternoon train or bus leaves a full evening free once luggage is dropped: a first walk across Stari Most with the day's crowds thinned out, and a meal on either riverbank as the light fades over the Neretva. The bridge itself, floodlit after dark, offers a genuinely different view from the daytime version most photographs capture.

Where to stay: Guesthouses and small hotels cluster on both sides of the river within the old town itself, putting a visitor within flat walking distance (aside from the bridge's own steep steps) of Stari Most and Kujundžiluk. Check current rates and availability before booking, since specific properties were not independently verified in this research pass.

Where to eat: Restaurants on both banks serve Bosnian coffee and ćevapi within sight of the bridge; an evening meal here, after the daytime crowds have cleared, is a noticeably calmer version of the same view covered in the day-trip itinerary.

Day Two: Kravice Waterfalls

The Kravice waterfalls, a wide horseshoe-shaped cascade on the Trebižat river around 40 minutes from Mostar by car or organised tour, offer a genuinely different landscape from the old town's stone streets: a broad, tiered waterfall dropping into a large natural pool, surrounded by open grassland rather than urban stonework. No direct public bus serves Kravice; a taxi, rental car or a half-day organised tour from Mostar is the practical way to reach it. The walk from any car park down to the water's edge is a gentle slope rather than a demanding climb, manageable for legs still easing back into full activity after the marathon.

Getting Home

Getting back to Sarajevo: Return by the same direct train or bus service, journey time around 2 hours. Check the current timetable before travelling, particularly for the train, which runs only twice daily.
