The marathon finishes on a Sunday in early October. Many museums in Poland shut on Mondays, but the silver mine at Tarnowskie Góry does not. Its October timetable runs every day, which makes the Monday after the race a workable day for a sit-down, underground outing that asks for little from the legs.

October in Tarnowskie Góry: the street is cool in October, and underground it is about 10°C all year, so a fleece under a light coat suits both.

UNESCO added the Tarnowskie Góry mining landscape to its World Heritage List in 2017. The listing covers the underground mine, with its adits, shafts and galleries, and the water-management system built to drain it. Surface remains include shaft relics and waste heaps, plus a nineteenth-century steam pumping station. The gravity drainage still works and supplies drinking water to the town.

Direct Intercity and TLK trains from Katowice take 27 to 30 minutes, with fares from PLN 19. One timetable page listed five direct connections on its sample day, from 06:23 to 16:21, so the return needs planning. The line has had works that moved passengers onto replacement buses in the past, so look at the dated timetable the evening before and check whether trains or buses are running that day.

The mine

The Historic Silver Mine route runs 1,740 m underground in a triangle linking three former shafts, Anioł, Żmija and Szczęść Boże. A boat carries visitors over 270 m between two of the landings. The guided tour in Polish lasts about two hours and cost PLN 84 (PLN 73 reduced) in the published price list. A tour in another language cost PLN 115 and needs booking. In October the mine is open 9:00 to 15:00 every day, so the last tour starts early afternoon. Keep to the morning.

The tourism board describes the route as adapted for visitors with limited mobility, with a ramp at the entrance and lift access to upper floors, and says reservations are only required for groups. Wheelchairs can be borrowed. Ask at the ticket desk about stairs before buying if your legs are still sore. Wear flat shoes with a good grip, since the floor is damp.

The adit

The Black Trout Adit, Sztolnia Czarnego Pstrąga, is a separate hour-long boat trip along a drainage tunnel. It cost PLN 73 (PLN 62 reduced) and takes children from age 4. In October the tours run 11:00 to 13:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 15:00 at weekends, starting on the hour, and the times can shift with bookings. A combined ticket for both sites cost PLN 145, but it is sold for groups only. Choose one of the two for a first visit, and take the mine if there is only time for one.

Eating and the walk

The old town centre of Tarnowskie Góry has cafés and restaurants, and the town's tourism office is the place to ask. Check the walk from the station to the mine entrance in a map app, and take a taxi if the legs are heavy.

Getting back

Take a direct train back to Katowice, and check the departure time when you buy the ticket, since the sample timetable's last direct service left at 16:21. From Katowice the airport is reached by rail or the AP bus, as described in the race guide.
