After the Skagen Marathon: Skagens Museum
The Route: Skagen → Skagens Museum → Skagen Logistics: Everything is within walking distance in town. Day trip. Marathon Month: October Duration: Day trip
Skagen (harbour) ──(short walk)──> Skagens Museum, Brøndumsvej 4
Skagens Museum ──(short walk)──> Museum Garden café
The legs will not take much more than a short walk on the Monday, and Skagen is built for that. Skagens Museum at Brøndumsvej 4 was founded in 1908, and the present building was completed in 1928. It describes itself as holding the world's largest collection of work by the Skagen painters, the group of artists who gathered in the town in the late 19th century. Anna Ancher is one of them, and Anna Ancher: Painting Light by Hillyard and Lehmann, from the Dulwich Picture Gallery, is a good companion if you want to read before you go.
The museum has the Brøndum Dining Hall. The Museum Garden has a café in the first home of Anna and Michael Ancher. Opening hours vary by season, so check the museum's own website before you set out, especially outside the summer months.
The day
Go to the museum in the morning and stay for lunch in the garden. The afternoon can be a slow walk through the streets towards the harbour. The race course runs back and forth through the same town, so you will see it again at walking pace.
Getting home
Skagen has no airport. See the Frederikshavn and Aalborg articles for the routes out.
