Matka Canyon sits around 17 km from central Skopje, close enough that the trip barely registers as travel by taxi, and easily reachable by public bus for a visitor prioritising cost over speed. October's milder temperatures suit the canyon's mix of flat lakeside walking and steeper hiking trails better than the height of summer would, without the heaviest crowds of the warmer months.

The canyon was formed by the Treska river and dammed to create Matka Lake, an artificial reservoir that now defines most of the visitor experience here.

The Boat Trip and Vrelo Cave

Small boats depart from the dam area for a short trip along the lake to Vrelo Cave, one of Europe's deepest underwater caves, its entrance opening directly onto the water. The boat ride itself is a low-impact, seated way to see the canyon's steepest walls up close, a sensible choice for legs still recovering from a marathon rather than a full hiking day.

The Monasteries

Several medieval Orthodox monasteries sit within or near the canyon, including St Andrew's Monastery close to the dam, built in the 14th century and now housing a small museum of medieval fresco fragments. These are reached by short, manageable walks from the main path rather than serious hikes.

Hiking Trails

For a visitor with more energy, marked trails climb along the canyon's cliff edges, offering views down over the lake and dam; these involve real elevation gain and uneven footing, worth treating with appropriate caution rather than attempted at pace so soon after 42.195 km.

Where to Eat

A handful of restaurants cluster near the dam and the start of the lakeside path, serving straightforward Macedonian fare with a view over the water, a reasonable lunch stop before heading back.

Getting Back

Return by the same bus line 60 service, or by taxi, to central Skopje. Check the current bus timetable before leaving the dam area, since service can be less frequent later in the afternoon.
