Ohrid sits on the shore of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, around 170 km southwest of Skopje and far enough by road that a same-day round trip would spend a disproportionate share of the day travelling. An overnight stay allows a proper walk of the hilltop old town without the return journey's three-plus hours weighing on the schedule, and October's quieter tourist season means the town's steep old streets carry considerably less crowding than the peak summer months bring.

Night One: The Old Town and Samuel's Fortress

Ohrid's old town climbs a hillside above the lake in narrow, steep cobbled streets, lined with wooden Ottoman-era houses, leading up to Samuel's Fortress, a medieval citadel with walls dating in part to the 10th century. The climb up through the old town is genuinely steep in places, worth pacing sensibly on legs still recovering from a marathon rather than rushed on the evening of arrival.

Day Two: Sveti Jovan at Kaneo

Sveti Jovan at Kaneo, a small Byzantine-era church perched on a cliff directly above the lake, is one of the most photographed buildings in the Balkans, reached by a flat lakeside path from the old town rather than any climb. The church's setting, a small stone structure on a rocky promontory with the lake's clear water below, is worth the walk regardless of whether the interior itself is open on a given day.

For a lower-effort second day, a boat trip along the lakefront offers the same views without the walking, a reasonable option for legs still not fully recovered.
