Tetovo sits under an hour from Skopje by frequent direct bus, close enough for an easy half-day trip built around a single, genuinely distinctive sight: the Šarena Mosque, also known as the Painted Mosque. October's mild weather suits the largely outdoor, flat walking a visit here requires.

The Šarena Mosque

The Šarena Mosque, originally built in 1438 and given its current appearance during an 1833 reconstruction by Abdurrahman Pasha, is covered inside and out in colourful geometric and floral painting, a decorative style found nowhere else in North Macedonia's mosque architecture at this scale. Entry is free. Visitors should remove their shoes before entering, and dress modestly, with women expected to cover their hair; these are standard expectations for an active place of worship rather than special tourist-site rules.

The Town Centre

Beyond the mosque, Tetovo's town centre carries a mixed Macedonian and Albanian character, reflecting the town's demographic makeup, with a scattering of cafés and shops in the streets around the main square, flat and easy walking for a short visit.

Where to Eat

Tetovo has its own reputation regionally for burek, a savoury filled pastry found throughout the Balkans but with local variations worth trying here specifically, alongside more general Macedonian and Albanian café fare.

Getting Back

Return by the same frequent direct bus service to Skopje. Check the current timetable before leaving, though departures run often enough that a long wait is unlikely.
