Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle, built by Edward I in the late 13th century, dominates the town's waterfront, with towers and battlements open to visitors and genuinely striking views back toward Snowdonia. The town's medieval walls, still largely intact, make for an easy, flat walk around the old town centre.

Where to eat: Caernarfon's town centre, within the old walls, has a good range of cafés and restaurants suited to an easy lunch.

The return drive to Llanberis retraces the same short route through the edge of Snowdonia.
