After the Wizz Air Sofia Marathon: Vitosha Mountain

Vitosha is not a distant excursion. It is the mountain most Sofia residents see out of their own kitchen window, rising directly above the southern edge of the city and reachable on the same metro card used to get to the marathon start. That proximity is unusual among European capitals and worth using on the day after a marathon, when a long journey is the last thing tired legs want.

The Cable Car

From Simeonovo, on the mountain's eastern side, a gondola climbs over 1 km in elevation in around 30 minutes, carrying a visitor from the city's edge to open alpine terrain without a single step of climbing. The temperature drop between the base and the top is often noticeable even in October, worth a layer packed specifically for the ride rather than assumed unnecessary because the city itself feels mild.

Aleko Hut and the Cherni Vrah Ridge

Bus 66 runs instead to Aleko Hut, a long-standing base for hikers and, in winter, skiers, sitting below Cherni Vrah, Vitosha's highest point at 2,290 m. The path from the hut to the summit is a real hike, not a stroll, and best treated as optional rather than assumed given how recently a visitor has run 42.195 km. The lower paths around the hut itself offer gentler walking with wide views back down over Sofia.

The Golden Bridges

A stretch of the Vitosha ridge known as the Golden Bridges is a boulder field left behind by an ancient rockslide, striking to look at even without descending into it on foot. It sits within reach of the same bus routes serving Aleko Hut.

Where to Eat

Mehanas, traditional Bulgarian taverns, cluster around both the Aleko and Simeonovo access points, serving grilled meats and hearty stews suited to a cool mountain afternoon.

Getting Back

Return by the same bus service to Vitosha metro station, then Metro Line 2 back into central Sofia. Check current bus frequency before travelling, since mountain services can run less often outside peak weekend hours.
