The Split Marathon is run in the middle of February, and the Monday afterwards is the day to keep things small. Trogir fits: the old town is a few hundred metres across and sits on a small island between the mainland and the island of Čiovo, joined by bridges.

February in Trogir: this is the quiet season. Expect a cool, damp day with the chance of wind, and expect some cafés and shops to keep shorter hours or close for winter. The upside is empty lanes. Bring a waterproof, since much of the day is outdoors.

Line 37 is Split's local bus to the airport and on to Trogir. It is a public service and not a race shuttle, so check the stop you board at, the winter frequency and the last return at promet-split.hr before you leave. If the timetable does not suit, a pre-booked private transfer is the fallback.

The Old Town

The lanes are stone-paved, narrow and flat, and the whole old town can be crossed on foot in minutes. That makes Trogir easy on tired legs, although wet limestone is slippery and there are steps at the fortress and the cathedral tower.

St Lawrence Cathedral is the centrepiece. The west portal is by Radovan, dating from the 13th century, and it is worth studying before you go inside. Check opening times and any ticket price when you arrive. The Kamerlengo Fortress stands at the western tip of the island. Its walls involve climbing, so treat the visit as optional.

Luggage lockers are available at the bus station and at Ulica Alojzija Stepinca 12A, although you will not need them if you leave bags at your Split hotel. For a break, the Čokolada café is an easy stop in the old town.

Getting Back

Take line 37 back to Split, allowing for the last departure. If you are flying home the same evening, the same line passes the airport, so you can go straight there.
