St Andrews offers a coastal change of pace from the marathon's own inland, hilly Perthshire course, built around golf, a ruined cathedral and a historic university town. June in St Andrews: long daylight and generally settled weather, good conditions for a full day of walking around the town and coastline.

St Andrews is best known as the home of golf, with the Old Course a genuine pilgrimage site even for non-golfers who simply want to walk past it. The ruined St Andrews Cathedral and Castle, both on the town's coastal edge, offer flat, easy walking with sea views, a gentle option for legs recovering from a hilly marathon.

Where to eat: St Andrews' town centre has a good range of cafés and restaurants, popular with both students and visitors.

Getting Back

The return drive to Comrie retraces the same route back through central Scotland.
