Międzyzdroje: Bison, a Pier and a Beach Walk of Film-Star Handprints

Międzyzdroje is the Baltic resort nearest to Szczecin, with a free pier, a walk of film-star handprints, a bison reserve in Wolin National Park and a wooden viewing platform on a hill above the sea.

The race finishes somewhere between one and five in the morning, so Sunday belongs to the pillow and Monday is the first day with any use. Monday is also the day the National Museum in Szczecin is shut, which makes the coast an easy choice. Międzyzdroje sits on the Baltic side of Wolin Island, and the trains from Szczecin Główny get there in roughly an hour. Some services change at Świnoujście, which adds minutes. Check the timetable on the day, and look at the last train back before you order a second beer.

Summer in Międzyzdroje: the town fills with holidaymakers, the main street goes slow and sticky, and the beach is crowded by noon. Go early, bring a hat, and expect the Baltic to be cooler than the air suggests.

Morning: the pier and the handprints

Walk down from the station towards the sea and the town resolves into souvenir stalls, waffle kiosks and a promenade. The pier is free to enter. You pay nothing to stand over the water and watch a seagull steal a chip from a child, which is the main entertainment available. Allow half an hour for an out-and-back stroll, longer if the wind is up and you are still walking like a person who ran a marathon in the dark.

Near the pier the Aleja Gwiazd, the Walk of Stars, runs along the pavement. It has been collecting film-star handprints in cement since 1996, and finding the one you recognise takes about as long as finding a parking space in August. It is flat, it is short, and your calves will forgive it.

Midday: the bison

Wolin National Park starts at the edge of town. The bison reserve is the usual target, with an entry fee of about 6 zł at the last check, so confirm the price at the gate. The animals are large and unhurried, and in warm weather they are often asleep in the shade at the back of the enclosure. Bring patience. The walking inside is on gentle paths.

Afternoon: Gosań and the sea view

For a higher view, Gosań hill rises to about 95 m with a wooden platform at the top. On a clear day the view runs along the coast towards Ahlbeck on the German side. The climb is a real climb on a day when your quads are still sore, so take it slowly or skip it. Kawcza Góra is a second viewpoint reached by roots and steps, which a stiff runner will not enjoy.

If the weather turns, the Oceanarium has more than 70 aquariums and takes about an hour and a half. Tickets were about 60 zł at the last check, so confirm the price before queuing.

For a quieter hour, the Turquoise Lake at Wapnica is a flooded former chalk pit with water the colour its name promises. Check how to reach it from Międzyzdroje before setting out, because the walk is longer than it looks on a map.

Eating

The main street has the expected fish stalls and ice-cream windows. Ask where locals buy smoked fish and take the answer seriously, since the best stalls are rarely on the busiest corner.

Getting back

Take a train back to Szczecin Główny and confirm the last departure when you arrive. Allow a margin, since a missed connection at Świnoujście turns a pleasant day into a long evening.
