Cascata delle Marmore: The Waterfall on the Race Route

The Marmore Falls lie beside the marathon's route up the Valnerina, and a Monday visit gives the waterfall and the valley without a bib and a clock.

After the Maratona di San Valentino: Cascata delle Marmore

The Route: Terni → Cascata delle Marmore → Terni Logistics: A short drive or a local bus. Check the timetable for the Monday. Marathon Month: February Duration: Day trip

Terni ──(car or bus, check timetable)──> Cascata delle Marmore ──(same route back)──> Terni

The Maratona di San Valentino runs from central Terni up the Valnerina, and the organiser's route description has it passing near the Marmore Falls before Arrone and Ferentillo. Runners cover that stretch with their heads down. On Monday the waterfall is a short, slow visit.

February at the falls is cold and often wet. The waterfall is fed by a controlled release, and the flow depends on a published schedule, so check the official timetable for the day before going, and check which paths and viewpoints are open in winter. Take a waterproof, since spray soaks the viewpoints.

The visit

The site has paths with steps between viewpoints. After a marathon, choose the lower viewpoints and skip the upper climb, or go by the flatter approach if one is open. Check opening hours and ticket prices on the day.

Food

Ask at the hotel for a lunch recommendation, and check the Monday opening days, since small places close out of season.

Getting back

Return to Terni by the same road. If taking a bus, check the last departure before lunch. A taxi is the fallback.
