The Maratona di San Valentino finishes in Terni, and Rome is the gateway most runners fly through. A night in the city breaks the journey and puts you near the airports. Check the train timetable, since Sunday and Monday services vary, and strikes are occasionally announced.

February in Rome is cool and often wet. Daylight is short, so plan the walk for the afternoon.

Night one: Rome

The historic centre between Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain is flat and can be walked in a loop of a few kilometres. The paving is cobbled in places, which is tiring on sore legs. Timed tickets are sold for the main sights, so book ahead if you want one, and check opening days, since some museums close on Mondays.

Avoid the hill walks. A bus or taxi is easier.

Where to stay

Stay near Termini station or the flat part of the centre, so the airport link is short. Book a refundable room and ask about lift access.

Food

Roman pasta dishes are easy to find, and restaurants fill early. Ask the hotel for recommendations and book a table.

Getting Home

Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is linked to the city by a direct train and by taxi. Ciampino (CIA) is reached by bus or taxi. Check your airport, the first departures and the morning service.
