Berat earns its UNESCO World Heritage listing and its nickname, the "City of a Thousand Windows," from tiers of white Ottoman-era houses stacked up the hillside below its castle, their windows catching the light in dense, repeating rows. At 2 to 2.5 hours from Tirana, it sits far enough away to reward an overnight stay rather than a rushed same-day round trip.
Night One: Mangalem and the Osumi River
Mangalem, Berat's most photographed quarter, climbs the hillside on the castle's southern slope, its houses' windows and balconies stacked densely above the Osumi River, which cuts through the town below a stone Ottoman-era bridge. Walking Mangalem's steep lanes in the evening light, with the terraced houses lit from below, is the town's signature experience.
Where to stay: Guesthouses and small hotels cluster through Mangalem and across the river in Gorica, Berat's second historic quarter, putting a visitor within walking distance of both riverside views and the climb up toward the castle. Check current rates and availability before booking, since specific properties were not independently verified in this research pass.
Where to eat: Restaurants along the river and through Mangalem serve traditional Albanian fare, several with terraces looking directly across at the opposite quarter's stacked houses.
Day Two: Berat Castle
Berat Castle, a fortress with foundations dating to antiquity and rebuilt across Byzantine, Ottoman and Albanian periods, is unusual among the region's hilltop castles for still being inhabited today, with a small resident community living within its walls alongside several restored Byzantine-era churches. The climb up is genuinely steep in places, worth pacing sensibly on legs still recovering from a marathon.
