After the Tirana Marathon: Durrës

Durrës sits close enough to Tirana that the bus ride barely counts as travel, and the city carries a settlement history stretching back over 2,000 years, founded as the ancient Greek colony of Epidamnos and later a major Roman port. October's milder temperatures suit a day of largely flat walking around the old town and waterfront.

The Roman Amphitheatre

Durrës' Roman amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century AD and one of the largest in the Balkans, sits partly excavated within the modern city, its curved stone tiers still legible despite centuries of later building encroaching on the site. A small on-site chapel with surviving Byzantine-era mosaics sits within the amphitheatre's structure, a specific later layer added on top of the Roman original.

The Venetian Tower and City Walls

Sections of Durrës' old fortifications, including a surviving Venetian-era tower, trace the city's long history as a contested port fought over by Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans in turn.

The Beachfront

Durrës' long sand beach and promenade, Albania's most developed stretch of Adriatic coastline, offers a flat, low-effort walk for legs still recovering from a marathon, with cafés and restaurants lining the seafront.

Where to Eat

Seafood restaurants cluster along the beachfront promenade, a specific local strength given Durrës' status as Albania's principal port city.

Getting Back

Return by the same frequent direct bus service to Tirana. Check the current timetable before leaving, though services run often enough that a long wait is unlikely.
