Krujë sits on a steep hillside around 44 km north of Tirana, close enough for an easy half-day trip and inseparable from the story of Skanderbeg, the 15th-century Albanian nobleman who used the town's fortress as his base to resist Ottoman advances for over two decades. Given how recently a visitor has run 42.195 km, the town's steep streets are worth pacing sensibly rather than rushed.

Krujë Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum

The hilltop castle, largely rebuilt but incorporating genuine medieval foundations, houses the Skanderbeg Museum, a modernist building from the socialist era dedicated to the national hero's military campaigns, with murals, weapons and models detailing the sieges the fortress withstood. The castle also holds the National Ethnographic Museum, a restored 19th-century Ottoman-era house showing everyday Albanian domestic life of the period.

The Old Bazaar

Below the castle, Krujë's Old Bazaar is a still-functioning Ottoman-era market street, its wooden-fronted shops selling carpets, copperware and other traditional crafts rather than existing purely as a museum piece, a genuinely working counterpart to the more static exhibits up at the castle.

Where to Eat

A handful of restaurants along the bazaar and near the castle entrance serve traditional Albanian mountain fare, a reasonable lunch stop with views back down over the surrounding plain.

Getting Back

Return by the same direct minibus service to Tirana, departing regularly through the afternoon. Check the current schedule before travelling, since the exact departure times can shift slightly by operator.
