Shkodër is one of Albania's oldest and most historically layered cities, sitting beneath Rozafa Castle at the point where the Buna and Drin rivers meet Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans and shared with neighbouring Montenegro. Two to three hours from Tirana by bus, with journey time that can run long depending on traffic entering the capital, it rewards a longer stay that takes in both the city itself and the lake beyond it.

Night One: Rozafa Castle and the Old Bazaar

Rozafa Castle, built on a rocky hill above the confluence of two rivers, has origins predating Roman times and carries a well-known local legend involving a woman named Rozafa walled into the fortress's foundations as a sacrifice for its stability. Shkodër's old bazaar and pedestrianised centre, lined with Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman-era buildings, is Albania's best-preserved example of this specific architectural mix.

Where to eat: Shkodër's café culture is a genuine local feature, with a dense concentration of cafés along the pedestrianised main street reflecting the city's historic role as a regional trading centre.

Day Two: Lake Shkodër

Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans, straddles the Albania-Montenegro border and supports extensive wetlands and birdlife; boat trips from villages along the Albanian shore offer a low-effort way to see the lake without a demanding day of walking, a sensible choice given how recently a visitor has run a marathon.

Day Three: The Buna River and Velipojë

The Buna River, flowing from the lake to the Adriatic, and the coastal area around Velipojë offer a quieter, flatter landscape distinct from Shkodër's hillside castle, a gentle final day before the return journey.

Getting Home
