The TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon finishes on a Sunday in mid-October, which leaves Monday and the rest of the working week free for weekday GO service. Niagara Falls is the lowest-effort day out from Toronto: one train, no driving, and a viewing route with almost no gradient.
October in Niagara Falls: The summer crowds have gone, the water is as loud as in any month, and the air is cool enough that the spray from the Horseshoe Falls feels cold on the face. Daylight is short. Sunset falls shortly after 18:00, so a visit that includes the evening illumination means a late train home. Rain is common, so carry a waterproof layer and expect the viewing platforms to be wet.
GO Transit runs a direct service from Toronto Union Station to Niagara Falls GO on weekdays, and the journey takes roughly two to two and a half hours depending on the departure. VIA Rail also runs the route in about two hours, but with fewer departures. Check the weekday timetable and fare at gotransit.com before travelling, and note the time of the last train back to Union Station. WEGO buses connect Niagara Falls GO with the falls, and a taxi covers the same short distance.
The gorge rim and Table Rock
The Niagara Parks promenade follows the edge of the gorge from the American Falls viewpoints to Table Rock, at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. It is paved and flat, and benches are spaced along its length. The two ends are just over 1 km apart, which at post-marathon pace takes about half an hour with stops. There are no steps on the promenade itself.
Journey Behind the Falls, run by Niagara Parks, takes visitors down to tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls and to an outdoor platform at the base. It operates through the year, though individual parts of the route can close depending on conditions. Entry is paid, so check the price and opening times at niagaraparks.com. The descent is by lift.
Eating
Table Rock House Restaurant sits above the brink of the Horseshoe Falls and has tables facing the water. It stays open through the year, and the nightly illumination of the falls is visible from its windows after dark. Book a table in advance if the plan is to eat after sunset.
The return train is the fixed point of the day. Leave the falls in time to reach Niagara Falls GO with a margin, since weekday departures are not frequent.
