After the Tórshavn Marathon: Gjógv
The Route: Tórshavn → Gjógv → Vágar Airport Logistics: A hire car or a pre-arranged transfer is the realistic way to get here with luggage. Bus connections were not confirmed. Marathon Month: June Duration: 2 nights
Tórshavn ──(road, check bus or car)──> Gjógv (Eysturoy)
│
Vágar Airport (FAE) ◄──(road, allow time)
Gjógv sits at the northern end of Eysturoy, the second-largest of the islands, and is reached by road. Its name means gorge, and the harbour sits in one: a natural cut in the cliff that boats are hauled up from. It is a small place.
June in Gjógv is cool and light until late. Services in a village this small may be limited, so confirm your room and dinner. The journey from Tórshavn crosses the island by road, and the often-quoted tunnel time of "as little as 20 minutes" refers to part of Eysturoy and not to Tórshavn to Gjógv, so do not use it as a door-to-door estimate.
Night one: arrive and settle
Arrive in the afternoon and walk to the harbour. The gorge is a short, steep walk from the village, with steps in places. Look at it from the top and decide whether going down suits your legs.
Where to stay: Look for a guesthouse in the village and confirm it is open, whether it has a lift and where you can eat.
Where to eat: Ask your host, and book dinner. Restaurants in small villages often close early.
Night two: a slower day
Take a gentle walk along the road and the village paths. The wider area has serious hiking, and a day after a marathon is the wrong time for it. Keep the day for sitting and looking.
Getting to Vágar Airport (FAE)
Vágar Airport is on a different island from Eysturoy, reached by road through the sub-sea tunnels. Check a bus connection or a pre-booked transfer, and leave a generous margin. Do not book the first flight of the day.
