Suðuroy: Three Nights at the Southern End

The southernmost island, reached by a two-hour ferry crossing, with quiet villages and cliffs and a very long way from anything resembling a marathon expo.

Suðuroy is the long trip, and it is the right one if you have a few days and no wish to see another street corner for a while. The Smyril ferry crosses to the south in about two hours and five minutes, according to the operator, SSL, and the island at the other end is the quietest of the lot.

June on Suðuroy is cool and long-lit, with weather that can change the sailing. SSL's page mixes exceptions from different years, so read the live timetable for the sailing you want rather than rely on a printed one. Foot passengers need a ticket, and the operator publishes rules for boarding and vehicle queuing.

Night one: crossing

Recover centrally in Tórshavn first. On the second morning, take the ferry with your luggage and arrange local transfers before you travel. None of the ferry, bus or island transport is included in race entry.

Village visits are better than cliff hikes. Walk the quays, look at the grass roofs and eat what the one café serves. Leave a weather buffer in the plan: a delayed sailing is a normal event, not an emergency.

Where to stay: Book something in advance and confirm the address, the lift, and the transfer from the ferry.

Where to eat: Options in the small villages are limited. Ask your host to recommend a place and book.

Nights two and three: slow days

Keep one day for a short drive or a slow walk and one for nothing. Leave a flexible night in Tórshavn before onward travel, because a missed return ferry on the day of a flight is a bad plan.

Getting to Vágar Airport (FAE)

Return to Tórshavn by ferry, then take the SSL route 300 bus to Vágar Airport, about 50 minutes under ordinary service. Check the timetable for your day. Allow a night in Tórshavn before the flight so that a delayed crossing cannot cost you the plane.
