After the Tórshavn Marathon: Vágar
The Route: Tórshavn → Vágar → Vágar Airport Logistics: Route 300 bus or a booked vehicle with your luggage. A car or taxi helps for the viewpoints. Marathon Month: June Duration: 1 night
Tórshavn ──(approx. 50 mins, route 300)──> Sørvágur / Vágar Airport
│
Bøur and Gásadalur ◄────┘ (car or taxi)
Vágar is the island with the airport, so staying there on your last night removes the early-morning transfer. It also has some of the best scenery in the Faroes, if you are in the mood to look at it from a seat.
June on Vágar is the start of the summer birdlife season, according to Visit Faroe Islands, and the days are very long. Fog and wind can cut visibility, so check the forecast and keep the evening flexible.
Night one: the island
Take the route 300 bus from Tórshavn, which takes about 50 minutes under ordinary service. Check a departure that fits your day, because Sunday and holiday timetables are thinner. Alternatively, book a vehicle.
Sørvágur is the village nearest the airport, and the nearby villages of Bøur and Gásadalur are reached by road. A short viewpoint visit from a car or taxi is a very different thing from a hike, so skip the paid and regulated hiking trails immediately after the race. Look at the cliffs from a parked car, walk a few hundred metres to a viewpoint, and stop.
Where to stay: Look for accommodation in or near Sørvágur and confirm the address, whether it has a lift and how far the airport is.
Where to eat: Ask your host. Restaurants in the village may have limited opening in the evening, so book.
The next morning
Do nothing ambitious. The airport is close, and your legs will be happy to wait.
Getting to Vágar Airport (FAE)
The airport is on the same island, a short drive from Sørvágur. Take a taxi or arrange a lift. Leave a comfortable margin, and check your check-in time. If you are travelling back to Tórshavn first, remember that the route 300 journey takes about 50 minutes.
