The Toruń Marathon ends on a Sunday in October, and the day after is a Monday, which matters here. The museums in Bydgoszcz close on Mondays, so a Monday visit is for walking, and the indoor sights belong to Tuesday. The town is close and the trains are frequent, so the decision can wait until you see how the legs feel.

October in Bydgoszcz: the days are short and cool, and the river air is damp, so wear a coat and plan the loop for the middle of the day.

Direct trains run between Toruń Główny and Bydgoszcz Główna in about 35 to 45 minutes, operated by Intercity and regional services. One timetable page listed 28 connections a day and said trains can run every dozen minutes or so at busy times. Fares start at PLN 19 on a regional train and PLN 24 on a direct Intercity train. The last departure to Bydgoszcz was listed around 22:47. Check the dated timetable, as it changes on 25 October 2026.

The Old Town and the granaries

The three timber-framed granaries on ul. Grodzka were built in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by the merchant Samuel Gotlieb Engelmann, and today they house the District Museum. This is the usual place to start the walk. In the Old Town square, a figure of Mistrz Twardowski appears at the window of house number 15 at 13:13 and 21:13. St Martin and St Nicholas Cathedral on ul. Farna is a few steps from the square and has free entry. The Old Town walk takes 30 to 45 minutes, starting from the market hall towards ul. Długa.

Mill Island

Mill Island is about 6 hectares between the Brda and the Młynówka, a short walk from the square, and is free to enter all year. Individual buildings charge admission. The Rothera Mills exhibition takes about 90 minutes to two hours, tickets are sold at the counter or online, and the sound is turned off between 16:00 and 17:00. The European Money Centre, a branch of the District Museum, has two small rooms and takes about 30 minutes. It shows the Bydgoszcz Treasure, 486 gold coins found under the cathedral floor in 2018.

The District Museum's published hours were Tuesday to Thursday 10:00 to 18:00 and weekends 11:00 to 17:00, with Monday closed. Check Friday hours and ticket prices before you go.

Venice and the evening

Bydgoszcz Venice runs along the Młynówka beside the island. The Magic Steps between houses 6a and 7 light up after dark. A morning walk and an evening one show the street differently. The Opera Nova stands a few minutes' walk from the Old Town along the Brda, and its programme is on the opera's website.

Choose a restaurant near the Old Town square.

Getting back

Take a direct train back to Toruń Główny. Check the walk from the island to the station on a map and allow time for it. Travel light, or arrange luggage storage before you go.
