After the Toruń Marathon: Two More Nights in Toruń

The Route: Toruń → Toruń Logistics: Keep the same Old Town hotel and do not move luggage. Short walks to each stop. Marathon Month: October Duration: 2 nights

Old Town hotel ──(on foot)──> planetarium, gingerbread museum, Old Town Hall museum, Mostowa

The marathon is on a Sunday in October, and the cheapest way to recover is to stay where you are. Two more nights in the Old Town mean a Monday and a Tuesday with no bags to carry and nothing to catch. The sights below are seated or short, which suits legs that have just done two laps of the river.

October in Toruń: the monthly mean is 8.7°C, so the streets are cool and the indoor museums are the best use of the afternoons.

Ask the hotel about the extra nights when you book, and keep a second hotel in mind in case the room is not free. Hotel 1231 in the castle quarter and Hotel Gotyk at Piekary 20 are both verified as operating, but their availability for the extra nights is not.

Night one: the planetarium

The planetarium is at Franciszkańska 15 and ties into the city's connection with Copernicus. A show lasts about 40 minutes and is seated, which makes it the easiest first outing after a marathon. Book through the online calendar. Seats for shows in a foreign language are arranged by email or at the counter, not through the normal online purchase. No race-weekend slot was verified, so check the calendar for the day.

Night two: gingerbread and the Town Hall

The Living Gingerbread Museum, Żywe Muzeum Piernika, is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with the last show at 17:00. A visit lasts about 75 minutes, and there is an English or bilingual show at 14:00. The shows are spread across the first and second floors, so ask about stairs if your quads are sore. It is not the same as the Toruń Gingerbread Museum, which is a different place.

The Old Town Hall museum is at Rynek Staromiejski 1 and holds Gothic art and the history of the city. Check the opening hours on the museum's site before going. The tower is a separate climb, and a day after a marathon it can wait.

Eating

Karczma Spichrz, at Mostowa 1, serves Polish cuisine and listed Sunday opening of 12:00 to 22:00. Check weekday hours before going. The restaurant 4 Pory Roku belongs to Hotel 1231 in the Przedzamcze complex, so ask the hotel for the current menu.

A book for the evenings

Dava Sobel's A More Perfect Heaven is an account of Copernicus that includes a dramatised play, and it fits the planetarium visit. The imagined conversations are invention, not evidence.

Getting home

You leave from the same city you ran in. Bydgoszcz Airport (BZG) is the nearest airport, with a direct bus to Toruń that is booked online, or bus 80 to Bydgoszcz railway station and a train. Check the date and the flight before choosing.
