Monday 3 May is a good day to cross a border. The marathon finished on Sunday, the legs want an easy day, and Slovenia is about 100 km up the road. Coaches run from the Autostazione on Piazza della Libertà, beside Trieste Centrale station, and the ride takes roughly an hour and a half depending on the service and the border traffic. Fares start at around GBP 13 on FlixBus, and the operator lists about a dozen departures a day. Check times and prices at flixbus.co.uk before booking, because they change by day. Slovenia uses the euro. Carry your passport.

May in Ljubljana. Early May is mild and often changeable, with showers that clear quickly. Trees along the river are in full leaf, and the café terraces are open. Evenings can be cool, so pack a jacket. In most years the days are comfortable for walking, though conditions vary.

Night One: The Old Centre

The old centre of Ljubljana is small and flat. The Ljubljanica river runs through it, lined with café tables and crossed by short bridges. Prešeren Square, with the Triple Bridge beside it, is the usual starting point, and the architect Jože Plečnik shaped much of what you see around the river, including the covered market colonnade. A slow riverside loop takes about an hour and has no climbs.

Ljubljana Castle stands on the hill above. A funicular runs from the old town to the top, and it is the sensible choice for tired legs. Check the current hours and ticket prices at the castle's official site, because they vary by season. The castle courtyard and ramparts give a view over the red roofs and, on a clear day, the Julian Alps beyond.

Where to stay: Grand Hotel Union is a long-established hotel a short walk from Prešeren Square, which keeps the walking short. Hotel Cubo is a smaller design hotel in the centre, close to the river. Both are in the old town area. Check rates and cancellation terms, since prices depend on the week.

Where to eat: Slovenian cooking leans on sausage, dumplings and soups. Ask for kranjska klobasa, the Carniolan sausage, and štruklji, a rolled dumpling that comes sweet or savoury. Riverside restaurants are pleasant but can charge more. A street back from the water often gives a better lunch. Book dinner ahead if you want a particular place, and check opening days.

Day Two and Return

Spend the morning at the central market and along the river, then take the afternoon coach back to Trieste. Leave time to reach the Autostazione, and check the last coach of the day. For Trieste Airport (TRS), check the onward rail or bus link and the Sunday or Monday timetable before relying on it. For an early flight, stay in Trieste for the last night instead.
