After the Kirchdorf course, a flat city on a big river looks like a gift. Linz sits on the Danube, and the riverbank is level, which is its most useful quality for anyone coming down a mountain marathon by stair.

May in Linz: the May normal is a mean daily maximum of about 20°C and a minimum of about 10°C, with roughly 89 mm of rain across the month. You may get sun on the water in the morning and a shower by four.

Getting there

Check the OÖVV journey planner for the route from Kirchdorf an der Krems to Linz main station. Ascension Day is a public holiday, so a reduced timetable is likely and you may not get a convenient train on race evening. If you cannot find one, sleep in Kirchdorf on the Thursday and travel on the Friday. Pack so that you can carry your own bag across a station on tired legs.

Friday: the riverbank

Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz stands on the Danube bank. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with a late evening until 20:00 on Thursdays, and it is closed on Mondays. Check the website for the current ticket price and any special exhibition hours before you go. It is a seated, level visit and kind to recovering quads.

The Ars Electronica Center is across the water. Check its opening hours and ticket prices on its own website before you plan around it.

Eat near the riverbank and keep the afternoon loose.

Saturday and Sunday

Spend the weekend on short, flat walks along the Danube and in the old town. Linz has plenty of hotels in the central station and riverbank areas. Choose one close to the main station if your onward move is by rail or by the airport bus, and confirm breakfast hours and luggage storage for your dates.

Getting to the airport

Linz Airport lists bus 601 to Linz main station, which takes about 22 minutes. Check the bus times against your flight and allow a margin on a Sunday morning.
