Some trips are improved by doing very little, and the finish town of a mountain marathon is a good place to do it. Kirchdorf has the Stadtamt where you crossed the line, a pedestrian zone on Redtenbacherplatz and a hotel on the Hauptplatz. That is enough for a recovery weekend.
May in the Kremstal: the Linz May normal is a regional guide only: a mean daily maximum of about 20°C and a minimum of about 10°C, with roughly 89 mm of rain across the month. The valley is cooler than the Danube. Bring a layer and a rain jacket.
The first night
Hotel-Garni Schwarzer Bär at Hauptplatz 9 is the central hotel in Kirchdorf. It serves breakfast. Confirm the walk to the start line and ask about luggage storage, since no bag drop was found at the race. Book a cancellable rate early, because Ascension Day is a public holiday and rooms in a small town can go quickly.
Eat close to the hotel on the Thursday evening. Check that your chosen restaurant opens on the holiday.
Friday: Micheldorf
Micheldorf is the next place along the Kremstal. The regional tourism body lists a former scythe-forge, the Sensenschmiedemuseum, there. Opening days and accessibility vary by season and by day of the week, so check the museum's own website or ring ahead before you set out. Allow an hour or two inside. Take the local rail or bus and check the Friday timetable, as holiday timetables sometimes carry over.
Keep the afternoon free. Ask the tourist office in Kirchdorf for a level walk beside the Krems that suits tired legs, and treat anything with a gradient as optional.
The second night
Stay at the same hotel if you can, since a change of room costs you carrying a bag and nothing else. Have an early dinner and an early night.
Getting home
Kirchdorf station connects onwards through the OÖVV network. If you are flying, plan the whole route to Linz Airport the day before, since bus 601 only covers the final leg from Linz main station.
