After the Über-Drüber Marathon: Schlierbach

The Route: Kirchdorf an der Krems → Schlierbach (bus or taxi) → Kirchdorf an der Krems Logistics: Confirm the transfer and the abbey tour before you book. Ascension Day is a public holiday. Marathon Month: May Duration: 1 night

Schlierbach is the village you pass through at around 5 km on each lap, when the legs still feel like somebody else's good idea. By the second lap you reach it with a very different outlook. An abbey tour is a decent reward for that.

May in Schlierbach: use the Linz May normal as a regional guide: a mean daily maximum of about 20°C and a minimum of about 10°C, with roughly 89 mm of rain across the month. The hill villages above Kirchdorf are cooler. Bring a layer.

Getting there

The village is a short hop from Kirchdorf, but not a walkable one at the end of a mountain marathon. Local buses run on the OÖVV network, and race day is a public holiday, so a reduced timetable is likely. Book a taxi in advance for the Thursday evening and ask the hotel whether it can arrange one.

The first evening

SPES Hotel & Seminare at Panoramaweg 1 is the hotel verified in Schlierbach. Confirm in advance that the kitchen will serve you after a finish that could run well into the afternoon, and ask whether the hotel will store a bag on race morning.

Friday: the abbey

Stift Schlierbach at Klosterstraße 1 offers tours of the abbey, library, church and glass-art collection. The operator gives roughly two hours. Its individual tours are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 with registration, and the porter lists holiday closure. That means Thursday, the race day, is out, and a Friday visit needs special arrangement. Write or ring the abbey well ahead and ask whether a Friday slot is possible. If it is not, treat the abbey as a reason to come back on a Tuesday.

The glass workshop has ordinary weekday hours according to the municipality, but public tours are not guaranteed. Do not plan around it without confirming.

Getting home

Ask the hotel to call a taxi to Kirchdorf station, or check the OÖVV planner for the Friday bus. Allow a margin before any onward train.
