Most runners fly out the day after the race. If you can, stay one more night. The marathon is held next to one of the largest waterfalls on earth, and the people who leave on Monday often saw it only from a hotel balcony.

July in Victoria Falls: the dry winter. Cool mornings, a warm middle of the day and a quick drop in temperature at dusk. The water is past its usual April to June peak but the spray still wets the paths, so wear a waterproof layer and shoes with grip.

The Viewpoints

The park is the main attraction in town, and the authority warns of slippery rocks and cliff edges. Check the current fees and opening times before you go. Ask your hotel whether a taxi can wait or return, since a short, flat stretch of path is more than enough after 42 km.

If the legs are not up to it, the alternative is a helicopter flight over the falls. The operator describes 12 to 13 minutes in the air with pick-up from town hotels. Check the weather and the price first, and think about how you feel in small aircraft.
