After the Wally Hayward Marathon: Two Nights at Dinokeng
The Route: Centurion hotel → Lodge transfer → Dinokeng Game Reserve (2 nights) → Game drives → Return Logistics: Book the lodge and the transfer together, and ask for a firm journey time. Marathon Month: May Duration: 2 nights
Centurion hotel ──(lodge transfer)──> Dinokeng (2 nights) ──> Game drives ──(transfer)──> Return
Gauteng Tourism places Dinokeng north of Pretoria and lists guided game drives and accommodation. Two nights give you an afternoon arrival, a rest and a full day of vehicle-based viewing, with no bush walk required.
May in Dinokeng: May is late autumn and the dry season is beginning. Early drives are cold, so bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat, and shed layers as the sun climbs.
Getting There
The tourism page gives only a broad estimate from the airport, which is not the same as a drive from a Centurion hotel. Ask the lodge for the real figure and arrange the transfer at the same time. Pack the bag you need within reach and ask for a stop on the way.
The Days
The first afternoon is for settling in. The full day is for game drives, which are mostly seated and suit tired legs. Expect vehicle steps and rough tracks. The guide chooses the route, and no sighting can be promised.
Choosing a Lodge
Pick a lodge through your operator and ask about the boarding steps, the distance from your room to the dining area and the time of the first drive. Check what the quote includes.
Getting Home
Return to Centurion or the airport by the transfer you booked, and leave room for the road before a flight.
