After the Wally Hayward Marathon: Irene Farm and a Long Lunch
The Route: Centurion hotel → Arranged transfer → Irene Farm → Long lunch → Hotel Logistics: Ask your hotel for a car and for the actual journey time. Keep luggage at the hotel. Marathon Month: May Duration: Day trip
Centurion hotel ──(arranged transfer)──> Irene Farm ──> Long lunch ──(transfer)──> Hotel
Irene Farm sits on Nellmapius Road, and it works as a recovery day because the main activity is sitting down to eat. The Deli and De Stoep are free to visit, so you can have lunch without paying to enter the grounds. How long the transfer takes depends on your hotel, so ask the front desk for a figure and not a map estimate.
May in Centurion: May is late autumn. Mornings are cool and the middle of the day is warmer, and rain is possible. Bring a layer for the garden tables.
Choosing the Day
Weekends and public holidays are the busy days. The farm has announced a grounds entry fee for those days, aimed at the grounds and not the Deli or De Stoep. If you go on the Sunday after the race, check the current fee before you leave. A Monday may avoid it, but check that too. A farm market is not guaranteed in May, so do not plan around one.
The Visit
Ask for a table near the door, because uneven ground is awkward after a marathon. Animal contact is currently restricted, so do not promise children a petting session. Walk the grounds only as far as is comfortable, and keep the rest of the day empty.
Getting Home
Return to your Centurion hotel by the car you arranged. If you leave the country the same day, ask the hotel about luggage storage and late checkout when you book.
