After the Wally Hayward Marathon: Three Nights at Kruger National Park

The Route: Centurion hotel → Transfer day → Kruger lodge (3 nights) → Game drives → Return to Gauteng Logistics: Secure the accommodation first, then choose flights or a road transfer. Marathon Month: May Duration: 3 nights

Centurion hotel ──(flight or long transfer)──> Kruger lodge (3 nights) ──> Game drives ──> Return

Kruger is not a day trip from the race. Treat it as a separate regional journey with a transfer day at each end. Times depend on the gate and the camp you choose, so settle the lodging before you book the way there.

May in Kruger: May is dry and cool. Mornings are cold on an open vehicle and afternoons are warmer. Bring layers.

Health Check First

NaTHNaC places May within the malaria transmission season for relevant parts of Kruger. Centurion lies outside the described malaria areas, so adding Kruger changes your advice. Get itinerary-specific advice four to six weeks before you travel.

Gate Times

SANParks lists May entry from 06:00, with gates closing at 17:30. A late arrival is therefore a real constraint, so plan to reach the gate in daylight and allow for the camp's own distance from it.

The Days

Keep game viewing vehicle-based and limit the number of camp changes. A seated drive suits legs that have run a marathon. Ask your lodge about the boarding step and the start time of the first drive.

Getting Home

Allow a full day to return to Gauteng, and book your onward flight for a later day or add an airport night.
