After the Waterford Viking Marathon: Waterford Greenway and Mount Congreve Gardens
The Route: Waterford → Waterford Greenway → Mount Congreve Gardens Logistics: On foot or by bike; the same route the marathon's own Greenway miles cover, now at a much gentler pace. Marathon Month: June Duration: Day trip
Waterford ──(on foot/bike)──> Waterford Greenway ──> Mount Congreve Gardens
Local runners describe the marathon's Greenway stretch as its toughest mental test, but the same path makes for a genuinely pleasant walk or cycle the day after, at a pace that lets the scenery actually register.
The Greenway and the Gardens
The Waterford Greenway follows a former railway line along the River Suir, flat and traffic-free, popular with cyclists as well as walkers. Mount Congreve Gardens, passed on the marathon's own route, are worth a proper, unhurried visit rather than the passing glance runners get on race day, with extensive planted grounds suited to slow exploration.
Where to eat: Mount Congreve Gardens has its own on-site café, a straightforward stop partway along the Greenway.
Getting Back
The return journey to Waterford retraces the same Greenway path, an easy way to close out the day.
