Ambleside itself, the marathon's own start town, has enough to fill a gentle day without going far, and Grasmere, a short journey beyond, adds a literary dimension to the Lake District setting.

Ambleside and Grasmere

Stock Ghyll Force, a waterfall a short, easy walk from Ambleside's centre, makes a low-effort outing suited to legs recovering from race day. Grasmere, a short bus or drive away, is closely associated with William Wordsworth, who lived at nearby Dove Cottage; the village itself is compact and easily explored on foot.

Where to eat: Grasmere is well known for its gingerbread, sold from a small shop in the village centre, alongside a good range of cafés.

Getting Back

The return journey to Ambleside retraces the same short route by bus or car.
