After the Windermere Marathon: Beatrix Potter's Hill Top

Ambleside ──(car/bus)──> Near Sawrey

Runners pass through Near Sawrey at pace on race day, with little chance to properly take in the village where Beatrix Potter wrote much of her best-known work. A slower return visit gives Hill Top the attention it deserves.

Hill Top

Hill Top, the farmhouse Beatrix Potter bought in 1905 and used as inspiration for many of her stories, is preserved much as she left it, with a small garden and the surrounding village largely unchanged. This is a compact, low-effort visit, well suited to legs recovering from a hilly marathon.

Where to eat: Near Sawrey has limited options directly in the village; nearby Hawkshead offers a wider choice of cafés and pubs.

Getting Back

The return journey to Ambleside retraces the same road, a short and straightforward trip.
