After the Windermere Marathon: Windermere Lake Cruise
The Route: Ambleside or Bowness → Lake Windermere Logistics: By boat; cruises depart from both Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere. Marathon Month: June Duration: Day trip
Ambleside/Bowness ──(by boat)──> Lake Windermere
After a hilly, roughly 600-metre-elevation marathon circling the lake on foot, seeing the same water from a boat is a fitting, genuinely restful way to close out the weekend.
The Cruise
Windermere Lake Cruises run regular services around the lake, departing from Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside, with views of the same shoreline the marathon's own course follows on land. This asks nothing of tired legs beyond finding a seat.
Where to eat: Both Ambleside and Bowness have a good range of cafés and restaurants near their respective piers, a straightforward stop before or after a cruise.
Getting Back
The return journey depends on which pier the cruise ends at; both Ambleside and Bowness are well connected by local bus if needed.
