Yerevan ◄──(same route)────────┘
Dilijan sits in a densely forested mountain valley in northern Armenia, its climate and scenery different enough from the dry Ararat plain around Yerevan that locals have long nicknamed it Armenia's Switzerland. Around 1 hour 30 minutes from the capital, it rewards a slower two-night stay given both the journey and the town's own restful character.
Night One and Two: The Old Town
Dilijan's historic quarter, restored along Sharambeyan Street, preserves 19th-century wooden balconied houses now occupied by artisan workshops, small galleries and cafés, a specific architectural character distinct from anywhere else covered in this research batch. The town has long been associated with Armenian arts and film, home to a well-known artists' colony during the Soviet period.
Where to stay: Guesthouses and small hotels are concentrated through the old town and along the approach roads into Dilijan. Check current rates and availability before booking, since specific properties were not independently verified in this research pass.
Where to eat: Restaurants along Sharambeyan Street serve Armenian mountain fare suited to the cooler climate, distinct from the drier-climate cooking found in Yerevan itself.
Day Two: Haghartsin and Goshavank Monasteries
Two well-preserved medieval monasteries sit within easy reach of Dilijan: Haghartsin, set directly within the surrounding forest, and Goshavank, a short distance further, both offering gentle, mostly flat walking between their respective clusters of churches and khachkars (carved memorial stones), a suitably low-effort activity for legs still recovering from a marathon.
Getting Home
Getting back to Yerevan: Return by the same road, via car, taxi or direct bus. Check current timetables before travelling.
