Ljubljana crosses an international border but barely more than two hours of travel, a genuinely different country reached without needing a flight or a long drive. Slovenia's capital is small enough to see properly in a single overnight stay, its centre closed almost entirely to private cars.
Night One: The Riverside Old Town
The Ljubljanica river cuts through the historic centre, its banks lined with cafés and connected by a series of bridges, including the Triple Bridge designed by architect Jože Plečnik, whose work shapes much of the city's public architecture. Ljubljana Castle sits on a hill directly above the old town, reachable on foot or by a funicular, and offers a clear view over the terracotta rooftops below.

Getting Home
