Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's oldest and best-known protected area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, built around sixteen interconnected lakes stepping down through travertine barriers and waterfalls. A little over two hours from Zagreb by direct bus, it rewards two full nights over a rushed day trip, since the wooden boardwalks that thread between the lakes cover several kilometres and are best walked without a return bus to catch that same afternoon.
Night One and Day Two: The Lower and Upper Lakes
The park is split into Lower Lakes, with taller waterfalls and more dramatic gorge scenery, and Upper Lakes, set in gentler, more forested terrain, connected by boardwalks and a park shuttle boat and bus system. October's cooler temperatures and thinner crowds, compared with the height of summer, make for more comfortable walking on legs still recovering from marathon effort the day before.

With two full nights, a second, different walking circuit through the park is possible on the final morning, avoiding the temptation to rush both lake systems into a single exhausting day.
Getting Home
