Samobor sits at the foot of the Samoborsko Gorje hills, close enough to Zagreb that the bus journey barely clears half an hour, an easy add-on for legs that have already done their work the day before.
The Old Town and the Castle Ruins
Samobor's compact centre is built around Tomislav Square, its baroque and neoclassical facades largely unchanged for two centuries. Above the town, the ruins of Samobor Castle date to the 13th century, reachable by a short uphill walk that offers a wide view back over the rooftops and the surrounding hills, a gentle climb rather than a demanding one.
Kremšnita
Samobor is closely associated across Croatia with kremšnita, a layered vanilla custard and cream cake distinct from the versions served elsewhere in the country. Cafés around Tomislav Square serve it as a matter of local pride, and it is worth ordering here specifically rather than waiting to try it in Zagreb.
Getting Back
Return by the same direct bus service from Samobor's town centre back to Zagreb Bus Station. Given the 30-minute frequency, there is no need to plan the return trip precisely in advance.
