Split is built around and directly into the ruins of Diocletian's Palace, a Roman emperor's retirement residence completed around 305 AD, its ancient walls now filled with shops, bars and homes rather than kept behind museum glass. It sits roughly five hours from Zagreb by direct bus, long enough to justify a proper three-night stay rather than a quick stopover, and it serves as the main gateway to the central Dalmatian islands.
Days One and Two: Diocletian's Palace and the Riva
The palace's basement halls, cathedral (originally Diocletian's own mausoleum), and Peristyle square form the historic core of the old town, still inhabited and in daily use rather than preserved as a static ruin. The Riva, Split's palm-lined waterfront promenade, runs along the harbour immediately outside the palace walls and is the natural place to walk in the evening.
Where to stay: Hotels and apartments cluster within and immediately around the old town and palace walls, putting most sights within walking distance. Check current rates and availability before booking, since specific properties were not independently verified in this research pass.
Where to eat: Restaurants within the old town serve Dalmatian coastal cooking, built around fresh fish, seafood risotto and locally cured ham, distinct from the meat-and-pastry-heavy cooking found further inland in Zagreb.
Day Three: An Island by Ferry
Split's harbour is the main ferry hub for the central Dalmatian islands, including Hvar, Brač and Vis, each reachable as a day trip by regular ferry service. A single island crossing suits a slower final day, with the return ferry back to Split by evening.
Getting Home
Getting back to Zagreb: Return by the same direct bus service from Split's main bus station. Given the route's frequency, with departures roughly every hour across the day, there is no need to book far in advance outside peak season.
