The Race
For 2027 the start and finish move from The Station to the Foreshore Park car park on Wharf Road, because of construction at The Station. H Events says other course changes are planned and that the breakwall section which caused congestion has been removed. Runners who have done a previous edition should not rely on old maps, aid points or bag drop, and should check the participant update before travel.

History
The Newcastle Marathon belongs to H Events, the Newcastle-based organiser whose family business dates to 1994 and the Maitland Triathlon. That is the company's start and not the marathon's. The organiser does not give a first edition year for the marathon.
It is one of the events in NewRun, Newcastle's festival of running, and it has grown quickly. Local reporting described a field of roughly 600 runners four years earlier and about 4,000 across the marathon and half marathon in the latest edition, with the marathon capped at 1,500. The 2025 marathon recorded 759 finishers and sold out with a waiting list.
Until now the course has been a flat, anti-clockwise loop of about 10.55 km, run four times by marathoners and twice by half marathoners. It passes Honeysuckle, Nobbys Beach and Newcastle Beach and starts and finishes at The Station, the restored railway station at Wharf Road and Watt Street. H Events describes the course as AIMS accredited.
In 2025 a sand slide at the breakwall reduced the running line and caused congestion, and H Events said afterwards that the breakwall would be removed from the course. Construction at The Station now forces a further change: for 2027 the start and finish move to the Foreshore Park car park, and other course changes are planned.
The 2025 prize pool was A$3,500 for the top three men and women, and age-group medals were dropped to reduce waste. Sam Hill won the 2025 men's race in 2:41:25 and Steph Auston the women's in 2:54:41. In 2026 Nick Watson won in 2:33:32 and Avery Depiero in 2:51:05.
The course
The 2027 marathon starts and finishes at the Foreshore Park car park on Wharf Road, on the harbour edge of central Newcastle at the east end of the city. The organiser says the route continues to use the harbour and coastal corridor, including the Honeysuckle Foreshore, Nobbys Beach and Newcastle Beach, and a charity partner page also mentions Carrington.
Until now the course has been a flat, anti-clockwise circuit of about 10.55 km, run four times, on sealed road and shared path near sea level. The 2027 lap structure and streets are still being changed and remeasured, so a route line, a kilometre guide and an elevation profile will be added when the organiser publishes the map.
No official elevation figure was found. The main variables on this stretch of coast are wind and congestion on shared paths and not climbing.
Course Map
Until the 2027 route is published the map shows only the fixed points: the start and finish area at Foreshore Park and Newcastle Interchange in Wickham. Tap a marker for details.
Pacers
Pace teams were offered in recent editions, at 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 and 4:30, wearing H Events flags and drawn from local clubs including Dream Chafers and Newcastle Flyers. On a lapped course pacers and lapped runners share the path, and H Events has asked runners to keep headphone volume low. The 2027 list is not confirmed.
Newcastle in April is mild. The long-term mean maximum at Nobbys is around 22.8°C, and a recent April recorded a mean 9am reading of about 19.7°C and a mean minimum near 16°C. A 06:00 start can be a good deal cooler than that, and the coast is exposed to wind, so a light disposable layer is reasonable if the forecast is cool.
Sun is the second consideration. The foreshore has little shade, and a cap and sunscreen matter on later laps and for slower runners finishing near the six-hour cutoff.
H Events did not document a clothing donation arrangement, so do not assume that anything left at the start is returned or donated. Humidity can be high, so choose breathable kit and expect chafing on a long day in damp air. If the forecast is wet, a thin waterproof that packs into a belt will do more than a heavy one.
Run with a bottle if you need a specific sports drink, because on-course drinks in recent editions were Powerade or Staminade and water. The reusable timing chip fixes to the shoe, so lace tight and check it before the start.
Entry
Entry is open. There is no ballot and no qualifying time. Early-bird entry for the 2027 race opened on 1 July 2026 through the Crowdcatcher portal, and entries close the day before the event unless the race sells out first. A late-entry fee applies from two weeks before race day. The 2027 marathon fee bands were not visible in the research, so check the H Events page for the current price.
Do not wait for spring. The marathon and half marathon sold out in 2025 and a waiting list operated, and the 2026 marathon was capped at 1,500. Enter once travel is likely.
Charity entry is available. At registration a runner picks a charity and sets up a Grassrootz fundraising page, and nearly A$40,000 was raised before race day in 2025. That is a fundraising option and not a guaranteed-place system.
Entries can be transferred to another person through Crowdcatcher for A$10. The published refund schedule is 70 per cent up to six weeks before the event, 40 per cent from six weeks to 14 days before and none inside 14 days. Entries cannot move to another H Events race. No proof-of-time wave process, tour-operator allocation or elite standard was found.
Fast runner standards
There is no good-for-age route and no qualifying standard.

Kit collection
In the last edition for which a schedule was found, race-kit collection was on the Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 at The Station Newcastle, with a DJ, merchandise, coffee and food, and race-day collection from 05:00. Those details belong to the old venue and old dates. The 2027 collection point will almost certainly change with the move of the event hub to Foreshore Park, so use the race-week participant update and not the old venue.
The bib pack contains a bib and a separate reusable timing chip. The chip is attached to the shoe, and it is returned in the finish area. No chip means no official time. Merchandise, such as shirts and singlets, was sold at collection, with A$30 items in the last documented edition.
No medical certificate is needed. Proxy collection rules, ID and QR-code requirements for 2027 were not found, so take photo ID and the confirmation email until the participant update says otherwise.
If you are staying in Newcastle East, the CBD or Honeysuckle, collection is a short walk or light rail ride from the hotel. Collect on the Friday if possible, because race-day collection from 05:00 for a 06:00 start is tight.
Getting to the start
The marathon is expected to start at 06:00, as listed by a 2027 charity partner and used in recent editions. H Events advises arriving about 45 minutes early.
Getting there. The start and finish are in the same place, at the Foreshore Park car park on Wharf Road in the 2027 plan. Central hotels in Newcastle East, the CBD and Honeysuckle are within a walk of 0.7 to 2 km. Light rail runs along the harbour corridor, but a Sunday service before 06:00 may not exist, so check the 2027 timetable before relying on it. No free bib transport benefit was found.
At the start. Toilets are provided at the hub, and previous editions added toilets at Nobbys and Honeysuckle. The 2027 layout and the bag drop are not published, so do not rely on old Station-based instructions.
Clothing. April mornings are mild. A light layer suits a windy or wet forecast. No clothing donation arrangement was documented.
Headphones. H Events asks runners not to use headphones at a volume that stops them hearing marshals and passing runners. There is no blanket ban.
Chip. The reusable chip fixes to the shoe and is returned at the finish. Wear it from the start.
Finish. The course closes after six hours. All finishers receive a medal, and race photos are distributed through Marathon Photos. Because the start and finish are together, there is no post-race transfer. Most central hotels are walkable, and light rail or a taxi covers the rest of the inner city.
Nutrition on course
The last published aid layout, from a 2024 update, placed stations every 2 to 3 km of each lap, so marathoners on the old four-lap course passed a station frequently. Because the 2027 course is changing, positions are not stated here.
In recent editions drinks were water and Powerade or Staminade, a paramedical team and mobile first aid units were documented, and toilets were provided at the start and finish, Nobbys and Honeysuckle. Gels and food on the course were not documented, so carry your own gels.
Frequent stations on a lapped course mean you rarely need to carry fluid. Take a small amount from each and not a large amount from a few. Use the bins provided for gel wrappers and cups.
Spectating
Newcastle suits spectators. The course is compact and, on the old format, looped, so a supporter could see a runner several times without a car. The best single place is the foreshore hub, where each lap returned. The 2027 lap design is unpublished, so the plans below are provisional.
Live results are provided by MultiSport Australia. The exact 2027 tracking interface is unknown. Coffee and food are close to the hub, and Honeysuckle offers the widest choice. The 2027 barriers and spectator zones are not published.
- Watch the 06:00 start at Foreshore Park
- Stay near the hub for lap returns and the finish
- Expect several sightings without transport, depending on the final lap design
- Start at the hub, then walk west along the harbour promenade to Honeysuckle for a sighting
- Walk or take light rail back towards Foreshore Park for the finish
- The waterfront is flat and easy to navigate
- After the start, walk east towards Nobbys or Newcastle Beach for a coastal sighting
- Return to Foreshore Park for the finish
- This gives a different setting without a car
Post-race food
Honeysuckle is the easiest place to eat after the finish. It is a flat waterfront promenade with restaurants, cafés and bars, and it is useful for supporters who have been waiting. Check individual venues for Sunday opening close to race weekend.
April is traditionally promoted locally as Newcastle Food Month, though the 2027 programme had not been published at research time. For a hotel-based option, Bistro Dalby at the Novotel Newcastle Beach is close to Newcastle Beach and removes the need for a walk after 42 kilometres.
Where to Stay
Stay as close to the finish as budget allows. At the Newcastle Marathon the start and finish are together at the Foreshore Park car park in the 2027 plan, so the same neighbourhoods serve both.
Newcastle East
The best race-first choice. It is closest to Foreshore Park, Nobbys and Newcastle Beach, and many runners can walk to the start in under 15 minutes. It can be lively on a weekend, but the walk to a 06:00 start is hard to beat.
CBD and Civic
The CBD and Civic area balances price, restaurants and transport. Light rail runs along the harbour corridor, and the start is roughly 1.5 to 2 km away depending on the hotel. It suits runners who want museums and theatres as well as a race.
Honeysuckle
Flat, modern and on the harbour, with hotels and restaurants along the course corridor. It is 2 to 3 km from Foreshore Park, but excellent for spectators and post-race meals.
Newcastle Beach
Overlaps with Newcastle East and offers beachfront hotels. It suits runners who prioritise the setting and a short walk. Saturday-night bar and restaurant noise can vary by street.
Wickham
Where Newcastle Interchange sits, about 3 km from Foreshore Park, which helps rail travellers. Light rail connects it to the CBD and the foreshore. It is less scenic and often better value.
Merewether
The best beach lifestyle but several kilometres from the start. Choose it for a longer holiday and not for race logistics, because a 06:00 start needs a taxi or bus.
Booking advice is in the timeline below.
Recommended hotels
A short walk to the start and finish, with a restaurant on site for after the race. Race-weekend rates can be at a premium.
Central and stylish, close to Hunter Street. A rooftop bar means early sleepers should request a quiet room.
Suites and a central position within a flat walk of the foreshore. A longer walk than the East End options.
A luxury hotel near the Civic light rail stop and the museum. Farther than the East End picks.
Compact rooms, a gym and a flat walk or light rail ride to the start. Rooms are intentionally small.
Booking timeline
Newcastle's hotel market is larger than an island or resort race, so pressure is lower, but the best Newcastle East and foreshore rooms are limited and the race has sold out in recent years. Book a cancellable hotel four to eight months ahead if you want to walk to the start.
Enter the race when travel is likely. The marathon sells out, and a late entry fee applies from two weeks before race day. The 2027 early-bird entry opened on 1 July 2026.
Newcastle Airport is about 14 km from Foreshore Park, and Sydney Central is just under three hours away by direct train or coach. International runners often fly into Sydney and continue by train. The hub location will not be final until the 2027 map is published, so choose a hotel by neighbourhood (Newcastle East, Honeysuckle or the CBD) and recheck the final hub before travel. Arriving on Friday makes bib collection simple.
See & Do
Fort Scratchley and Nobbys are next to Foreshore Park, and the museum and gallery sit in the city centre.
Fort Scratchley
The fort overlooks the harbour and Nobbys, and gives direct context for the coast the race uses. Entry to the grounds and the museum is free. The tunnel tours involve stairs and narrow spaces, so leave them for later in the trip.
Newcastle Ocean Baths and Nobbys Beach
A gentle foreshore visit connected to the race landscape. A 6 km stretch of the Bathers Way coastal walk is ambitious the day after 42.2 km, so choose a short section.
Honeysuckle Foreshore
A flat harbour boardwalk with cafés and restaurants. It works for a short recovery stroll.
Newcastle Museum
Free permanent exhibitions, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 in current information. An indoor option with seating that asks for little walking the day after a marathon.
Newcastle Art Gallery
Reopened in 2026 according to Visit NSW. Check exhibitions and hours for April.
After the Race
April is autumn in New South Wales. The trips below start with a five-minute ferry crossing and grow into a return to Sydney.
A short ferry crossing of the harbour from Queens Wharf to a quiet beachside suburb, with flat walking and views back to the city.
Seated cellar door tastings and a night among the vines, an hour from the city. Autumn is the end of the vintage.
Dolphin cruises out of Nelson Bay and sand dunes at Anna Bay, with boat-based sightseeing easier on tired legs than walks.
A practical extension for international flights, with ferries and museums first and coastal walks later.
