History

Strasimeno is a Lake Trasimeno festival built around a 58 km ultramarathon around the shore, with separate finish lines in towns along the route. The marathon is one of them: a separately entered and classified, FIDAL-certified 42.195 km finish at Sant'Arcangelo di Magione. The festival is run by ASD Filippide and Dream Runners Perugia, and the organiser advertises the 2027 festival as its 25th.

The edition counts are not one sequence. FIDAL lists the 2026 marathon as its 19th, while the festival's own number is higher, and the two refer to different series. Do not merge them. The organiser's regulation on its site is still headed 2026, so 2027 rules may change.

The first year of the marathon distance, the first field and the course record were not found, nor was a winners table.

The course

The marathon starts at Castiglione del Lago with every other distance and runs along the lake shore through intermediate finishes. The organiser's markers are about 10 km at Borghetto, the half marathon at Passignano and 34 km at San Feliciano. It finishes at Sant'Arcangelo di Magione at 42.195 km, so it is point to point and does not return to the start.

The surface is mixed. The organiser lists unpaved cycle-path sections in the 2026 route at km 5 to 8, 15 to 19.8, 22.8 to 27.5, 37.1 to 39 and 41.2 to 41.6, and says the final 2027 line is pending. Elsewhere the route is on paved roads, some of them open to traffic, and the rules tell runners to obey the road rules. The organiser calls the route predominantly level. It publishes no climb figure, and the chart stays between about 256 and 271 m.

Only the 58 km entrants run the full lap of the lake.

Kilometre by kilometre

Positions come from the route file and the organiser's 2026 regulation, so they are approximate for 2027. The organiser's 2027 line is not yet published.

Km 0 to 10: Castiglione to Borghetto. All distances start together at Castiglione del Lago, with a gun at about 09:15 per IUTA. The route leaves by Via Lungolago and Via Firenze at 1 and 2 km and heads north on the old Umbro Casentinese road beside the lake at 3 to 8 km. The organiser lists an unpaved cycle-path section from about km 5 to km 8, so wear shoes you trust on packed dirt and gravel, especially if March has been wet. A first intermediate finish stands at about 10 km at Borghetto, with a gate at 2 hours in 2026.

Km 10 to 21: along the north shore to Passignano. The route continues along the shore through Tuoro sul Trasimeno at 13 to 18 km to the half marathon finish at Passignano, reached at about 20 to 21 km on the lakefront. Passignano had a gate at 3 hours 15 minutes in 2026. A second cycle-path section runs from about km 15 to km 19.8.

Km 21 to 34: the east shore towards San Feliciano. From Passignano the route runs east on Via Tancredo Marchini at 23 to 27 km, turns south through Magione at 27 and 28 km and reaches San Feliciano by 29 km. The cycle path returns from about km 22.8 to km 27.5. The 34 km finish stands on the San Feliciano lakefront, the Lungolago Antonino Alicata. The 2026 gate there was 4 hours 30 minutes, which is stricter than the overall 6 hour limit, so a slow runner should check the 2027 gates.

Km 34 to 42.195: to Sant'Arcangelo. The last 8.195 km runs through San Savino at 36 to 39 km and along the Strada Regionale 599 to Sant'Arcangelo at 40 to 42 km, passing cycle-path sections at about km 37.1 to 39 and km 41.2 to 41.6 before the finish at Sant'Arcangelo. You finish about 15.8 km short of the point where the ultra runners finish, so your bag and your lift back to Castiglione need planning. Aid stands every 5 km and at each finish.

Wind on the lake shore and rain can matter. Detailed turns, gradients and timing mats are not published.

Km 0 to 10
Castiglione to Borghetto

A shared start with every distance, and the first cycle-path section from about km 5. Check your shoes.

Km 10 to 21
To Passignano

The north shore through Tuoro to the half marathon finish, with a second unpaved section from about km 15.

Km 21 to 34
Towards San Feliciano

More cycle path from about km 22.8, and a strict 2026 gate at 34 km.

Km 34 to 42
To Sant'Arcangelo

The last 8.195 km to a point-to-point finish, with a booked ride back.

Course Map

The map shows a previous edition's route, since the organiser has not published the 2027 line. Tap a marker for the start, finish, the marathon centre and the intermediate finishes, and scrub the slider or press play to move the orange marker along the course with the elevation profile beneath it.

Course and elevation profile42.2 km · 256–271 m

The profile stays within 15 m, between about 256 m at the lowest, near 10 km, and 271 m at the highest, near 22 km. There is no sustained climb or descent anywhere on the course, and the lake shore is flat. Surface and wind matter more than gradient here.

Pacers

No 2027 pacer times have been published.

It does not loop back

The marathon starts at Castiglione del Lago and finishes at Sant'Arcangelo di Magione, about 15.8 km short of the ultra finish. Only the 58 km race completes the lap of the lake. Book your ride back before you enter.

Check your shoes

Several sections are unpaved cycle path, and early March can leave them wet. Choose shoes you trust on packed dirt and gravel.

The 34 km gate

In 2026 the gate at 34 km closed at 4 hours 30 minutes, stricter than the 6 hour limit. Check the 2027 gates before you plan a slow run.

What to wear

Early March at a lake in central Italy can be cold at the start and mild later, and no sourced race-day temperature was found. The gun fires at about 09:15 at Castiglione del Lago, and the bags go onto vehicles by 08:45, so you wait with what you wear. Bring a throwaway layer.

Wet March paths affect shoe choice more than clothing, because several sections are unpaved. A dry change in your bag, which goes to Sant'Arcangelo, is worth having. Check the forecast in race week.

Entry

Entry is online and open, with no ballot. IUTA's 2027 price table lists the 42 km in three tiers, shown in the table below. At about €1 to £0.858 these are roughly £34, £39 and £43 before fees. A €5 discount applies to qualifying IUTA or CSMI members paying by bank transfer. The 2026 event had no race-day entry.

Before you pay, check that the registration platform offers a separate 42.195 km category, because IUTA's own text lists the finishes without a 42 km. Do not enter the 58 km by mistake.

The 2026 marathon rules required runners to be 20 or over, with a FIDAL card, a card from a foreign federation recognised by World Athletics, a RunCard or RunCard-EPS with a valid competitive athletics medical certificate, or, for a non-resident foreigner without a ranking, a tourist-sporting waiver. The 2027 documents and deadlines may differ. Event buses were booked and paid for with the entry in 2026, so buy shuttle tickets at the same time.

Race Weekend

Marathon centre and bib collection

In 2026 the pick-up was at the marathon centre on Viale Trappes, at the municipal pools in Castiglione del Lago, on Saturday from 10:30 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 19:00 and on Sunday from 07:30 to 08:30. Bring ID and your completed membership and medical forms. A representative of a running club can collect for the club. The 2027 hours, the venue and the document deadline are not yet published.

Getting to the start

This is a point-to-point race, so the morning needs a plan. Either sleep in Castiglione del Lago near the start and book a ride back from Sant'Arcangelo, or sleep near the finish and book a ride to the start.

In 2026 the organiser ran event buses at €5 each way, booked and paid with the entry. The Sant'Arcangelo pre-race bus left at 07:50, and post-race times were separate. Bags went into vehicles marked by finish town and distance by 08:45. The 58 km bag system returns to Castiglione, so a marathon bag must go to Sant'Arcangelo.

The 2027 shuttle times, Sunday rail service, strikes and road closures are not published. Chiusi is a mainline rail gateway with a connection to Castiglione, but the Sunday timetable needs checking.

Nutrition on course

The 2026 rules promise refreshments every 5 km and at each finish, including the marathon, with water and aid at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 km. Brands, solids and allergens for 2027 are not published.

Spectating

The simplest sighting is the Sant'Arcangelo finish, or the start at Castiglione del Lago with a separately planned transfer. Passignano and San Feliciano are possible stationary viewpoints on the shore, at about 21 km and 34 km, but the lake roads and rail, and the course closures, make a timed three-stop itinerary unrealistic without the 2027 schedules. No live tracker was found.

Route A: start to finish
  1. Watch the start at Castiglione del Lago
  2. Take a booked shuttle or a car to the Sant'Arcangelo finish
  3. Wait at the finish for your runner

Post-race food

The organiser promises a refreshment at every finish, including Sant'Arcangelo. Sant'Arcangelo is a small settlement and a leisurely meal is not guaranteed there, so take calories at the finish and check your shuttle time before you plan lunch.

Lake Trasimeno is known for freshwater fish, and early March is outside the main season, so ask about Sunday kitchen hours before booking.

Where to Stay

Choose between the start and the finish, then book the ride that links them.

Castiglione del Lago

The start and the pick-up are here, and arrival logistics are better. You will need a booked ride back from Sant'Arcangelo after the race, about 9.5 km in a straight line.

Sant'Arcangelo di Magione

Close to the finish but small, so check winter opening and the early bus or car to the start.

Passignano and San Feliciano

Quieter lake towns that suit companions, but the start transfer must be booked.

Perugia

A wider choice of rooms, with an early transfer on race morning.

Chiusi

A practical rail gateway with a connection to Castiglione.

The organiser has a hospitality page. Book a cancellable room once your shuttle seat is confirmed.

Booking timeline

The €40 tier closes on 17 January, the €45 tier on 14 February and the €50 tier on 2 March. Choose 42.195 km, not the 58 km, once you have checked the category on the platform, and buy the shuttle seats with your entry. Reserve a cancellable room at the start or the finish, depending on which shuttle seats you hold.

Perugia airport is closer than Rome, but flights may be limited, so check what actually flies. Revisit Sunday trains, closures and the weather in race week.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay near the start or the finish?

The start is at Castiglione del Lago and the finish at Sant'Arcangelo di Magione, about 15.8 km short of the ultra finish. Choose one, and book the shuttle that links the other.

How far in advance should I book a hotel?

Book early for the lower fee tier and for a cancellable room. The tiers close on 17 January, 14 February and 2 March. Buy shuttle seats with your entry.

Is there free transport to the start?

No. The 2026 event buses cost €5 each way and were booked with the entry. The Sant'Arcangelo pre-race bus left at 07:50 in 2026.

What is the best area to stay?

Castiglione del Lago for arrival logistics and the start. Sant'Arcangelo is close to the finish but small. Passignano and San Feliciano suit companions but need a booked transfer.

When does the expo open?

In 2026 it was at the municipal pools on Viale Trappes in Castiglione del Lago on Saturday afternoon and early Sunday, with Sunday pick-up from 07:30 to 08:30. Check the 2027 hours.

What is the weather typically like?

Early March at the lake can be cold, wet or mild. The route runs on an exposed lake shore. No race-day temperature series was found, so check the forecast in race week.

How do I get from the airport to the start?

Perugia is closer than Rome, but flights may be limited. Chiusi is a mainline rail gateway with a connection to Castiglione, and the Sunday timetable needs checking.

Is there a bag drop?

Yes. Bags go onto vehicles marked by finish town and distance by 08:45. A marathon bag goes to Sant'Arcangelo; the 58 km bag system returns to Castiglione.

Should I bring a throwaway layer?

Probably, because you wait at the start and the gun is at about 09:15. No discard policy was found, so ask the organiser.

Is the marathon a loop of the lake?

No. It is point to point from Castiglione del Lago to Sant'Arcangelo, and only the 58 km race completes the lap. Several sections are unpaved cycle path, and the cut-off was 6 hours in 2026.
