After the Aalborg Marathon: Frederikshavn and the Kattegat Coast

The Route: Aalborg → Frederikshavn → Sæby or Skagen → Aalborg Airport Logistics: One hotel for three nights, with short rail or bus outings. Frederikshavn is the junction for the Skagen line. Marathon Month: August Duration: 3 nights

Aalborg ──(train)──> Frederikshavn (3 nights) ──(Skagen line or bus)──> Skagen / Sæby ──(return)──> Aalborg Airport (AAL)

Frederikshavn is a port town on the Kattegat, and it is the junction where the railway to Skagen begins. A runner who wants a slow week after the marathon, without packing a bag every morning, can use it as a base and make short outings along the coast.

August in Frederikshavn. Mid-August is high summer on this coast, so the beaches and harbours are busy. Book your room as soon as you have your entry, and check opening hours before each outing.

Getting there

Take the train from Aalborg to Frederikshavn. Check the journey time and the Sunday timetable on Rejseplanen.

Night one: the town

Stay close to the station and the harbour so that the departures for Skagen and the bus connections are on your doorstep. Compare cancellable rates, and ask about breakfast times and luggage storage. The first evening is for a meal and a flat walk by the harbour.

Day two: two museums

The Frederikshavn Kunstmuseum is the only museum in the Nordic region devoted to ex-libris, or bookplate, art, with about 250,000 original pieces according to the tourist board. It is a quiet, indoor visit. The Nordjyllands Kystmuseum at Bangsbo Fort is a maritime history museum with naval heritage and bunkers. The Bangsbo site is larger and involves more walking, so choose a short visit and check the transport. Check hours on both museums' websites.

Day three: Skagen or Sæby

Skagen is 38.8 kilometres up the Skagen line. The railway from Frederikshavn serves ten stations, with frequent local trains according to the line's operator. Skagens Kunstmuseer, the museum of the Skagen painters, is the main reason to go, and it is an indoor, level visit.

Sæby is the other outing, with a medieval church built around 1470, a water mill dating from 1710 and a Renaissance manor in a moat. The town is small and easy to cover on foot. Check the bus or train time from Frederikshavn.

Night three and onward

Keep the last evening simple. Eat early and pack the night before.

Getting home

Travel back to Aalborg by train and fly from Aalborg Airport (AAL), which has bus and train links. Allow a generous margin for the connection and for an international departure.
