History
The Aalborg Marathon is organised by Aalborg Firmaidræt, with the running shop Løberen named as a supporter. The organiser says proceeds support the association and the local clubs that provide volunteers, and help develop the race. The event is based at Skansen Idrætscenter in Nørresundby, on the north side of the Limfjord, and the city's culture calendar listed the 2026 edition at the same venue on 15 August.
The programme combines the marathon with a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and a half-distance walkathon. The founding year, predecessor events, early fields, route changes and course records have not been published. The Aalborg Brutal Marathon on 26 March, run by AMOK on a hilly six-lap course, is a separate event with its own history.
The course
The marathon starts and finishes at Skansen Idrætscenter, Lerumbakken 11, on the high ground of Nørresundby, and is two laps of about 21 km. Each lap runs down Violvej and Løvbakken at km 1 and 2 and through Lindholm at km 3 to 5, crosses the Limfjord on Kulturbroen at about km 6, and follows the harbour front through Vestbyen to a turn near Søholt at about km 9.3, 3.9 km from the start.
The return runs along Peder Skrams Gade and Vestre Havnepromenade at km 11 to 13 and crosses back on Limfjordsbroen at about km 14. It continues through Stigsborg and Nørre Uttrup at km 15 to 18, turns back along Søndre Kongevej and climbs Godthåbsgade at km 20 to Skansen at km 21.1. Half-marathon runners finish there and marathon runners go out again over the same roads, crossing Kulturbroen at about km 27 and Limfjordsbroen at about km 35.
The course starts and finishes on a hill. It drops 42 m over the 15.9 km from km 0.8, reaches fjord level at km 5 and stays between 1 and 4 m through the harbour and the bridges until km 16.7. The climb back to Skansen is 43 m over 5.1 km (0.8%), and its steepest kilometre is Godthåbsgade at km 20 to 21, 25 m at 2.5%. The second lap repeats it, with 36 m of climbing between km 37.9 and the finish and another 26 m in kilometre 41 on Godthåbsgade. The organiser quotes 145 m of climbing.
The marathon starts at 08:40 and the half marathon at 09:00. Water is served at 5.5, 11 and 16.5 km on each lap and at the finish area.
Kilometre by kilometre
Km 0 to 6: down from Skansen and over the fjord. The marathon starts at 08:40 from Skansen, with a warm-up at 08:30. The first kilometre climbs 6 m to the course's high ground at 42 m, then the road falls 13 m on Violvej, 15 m on Løvbakken and 9 m through Lindholm, so the opening feels easy and the pace drifts quick. You reach fjord level at km 5 and cross Kulturbroen at about km 6.
Km 6 to 14: the harbour and the second bridge. The harbour front through Vestbyen is flat at 1 to 4 m, with the turn near Søholt at about km 9.3 and the first water point at 5.5 km before it and the second at 11 km after. Wind off the fjord is the variable here. Limfjordsbroen comes at about km 14, which is the first of the two bridges that open to boats.
Km 14 to 21: Stigsborg and the climb home. Stigsborg and Nørre Uttrup are flat to km 16.7, the third water point comes at 16.5 km, and then the course climbs 43 m over 5.1 km to Skansen, with 25 m of it in the last kilometre on Godthåbsgade at 2.5%. The lap point at km 21.1 is the loudest part of the course, because half-marathon runners finish and marathon runners go out again. Do not follow runners who stop.
Km 21 to 35: the second lap. The second lap repeats the first, with Kulturbroen at about km 27, the harbour front at km 27 to 34 and Limfjordsbroen at about km 35. The FAQ asks runners to reach 16 km and 35 km within 3 hours 50 minutes to avoid a possible delay at the bridges, which on an 08:40 start is 12:30. A runner on 4:30 marathon pace reaches 35 km at about 3:30 and is ahead of that. A runner on 5:15 is not, and may be stopped as the bridge lifts. The length of a delay is not published.
Km 35 to 42.2: back up to Skansen. After Limfjordsbroen the course repeats Stigsborg and Nørre Uttrup, then climbs 36 m over the final 4.3 km, with 26 m in kilometre 41 on Godthåbsgade. The finish is at Skansen, where showers, bag storage and food are. The 6-hour net limit on the FAQ ends at 14:40; the routes page gives 12:15, which conflicts.
A 42 m descent to the fjord, Kulturbroen at km 6, Limfjordsbroen at km 14, then a 43 m climb back to Skansen. Water at 5.5, 11 and 16.5 km.
The half marathon finishes here. Marathon runners carry on for a second lap.
The same circuit, with the bridge deadline of 3 hours 50 minutes at the Limfjordsbroen crossing at about km 35.
Nørre Uttrup, then 36 m of climbing to Skansen. Bridge delays are the risk for slower runners.
Course Map
Two laps from Skansen, crossing the Limfjord on Kulturbroen and returning by Limfjordsbroen. Tap a marker for details, and scrub the slider or press play to move the orange marker along the course with the elevation profile beneath it.
Pacers
Flag-bearing pacers run the marathon at 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15 and 4:30, with group departures two minutes apart. The half marathon has its own pacers from 1:30 to 2:30, which are separate. The 2027 allocation is not confirmed.
| Start | Pacing groups | Departure |
|---|---|---|
| 08:40 | 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30 | Two minutes apart |
The Limfjord and Culture bridges stay closed to boats until 12:30 and then open every hour, which can stop a runner who arrives as one lifts. The organiser asks runners to reach 16 km and 35 km within 3 hours 50 minutes. On an 08:40 start that is 12:30 at the second Limfjordsbroen crossing at about km 35, which is roughly a 4 hour 37 minute marathon pace. Slower runners should ask the organiser how a delay is handled and whether timing stops.
The marathon starts at 08:40 on a Saturday in mid-August. No verified average temperature for that hour exists, so plan from the forecast in race week. The second lap can be warm and the fjord exposes the harbour front to wind and showers, so pack for both. A light, breathable top and a cap suit a warm second lap, and arm sleeves or a thin shell cover rain. The first hour is cooler than the third.
Bring your own nutrition: the organiser lists water and fruit at each depot, with a sugary drink and a salt-based product at some, but brands and gels are not published. Pack a dry change of clothes. Skansen has four changing rooms with showers in each of two zones, and free supervised bag storage in hall 1. The 2026 FAQ gives supervision from 08:30 to 14:30, which ends before the six-hour limit at 14:40, so confirm the 2027 window.
Entry
Entry is open through Sportstiming, and the organiser says tickets are available for 2027. The FAQ describes ordinary registration with no ballot and no qualifying time. The 2027 price bands and fees have not been published, so no price is given here.
The organiser runs a resale group for bibs. Read the group's terms before buying a transferred bib, since holding someone else's number does not make it a valid transfer. Refund rules, deferral and cancellation insurance have not been published. A guide runner for a blind or disabled runner is welcomed and needs their own entry to receive the participant benefits. Running buggies and baby joggers are allowed; keep to the right.
Entry includes a medal, a goodie bag, changing rooms, bag storage and parking at Skansen. T-shirts are sold separately with entry. The minimum age and headphone rules are not published. No charity route, good-for-age standard or official travel package was found. If you expect to finish near the limit, ask the organiser how the bridge rule interacts with the six-hour limit before you commit.
Fast runner standards
There are no Good For Age or fast-runner standards for this race.

Number collection
The 2026 FAQ gives two collection points: the running shop Løberen Aalborg, Vesterbro 89, from Wednesday to Friday before the race, and Skansen Idrætscenter on the Friday from 14:00 to 18:00 and the Saturday from 06:45 to 09:30. Bring the confirmation email with your number and name. Someone else may collect for you with the participant email.
These are 2026 arrangements: the FAQ still mentions Saturday 15 August and Monday 10 August, so its dates are old even though the homepage promotes 2027. A convention-hall expo is not documented. Collect on the Friday if you can, since the Saturday window closes only 50 minutes after the marathon starts.
Getting to the start
The 2026 FAQ gives a warm-up at 08:30, the marathon at 08:40, the walkathon at 08:50 and the half marathon at 09:00. A separate page gives different times for the other events, so 08:40 is the latest guidance for the marathon only. The start is at Skansen Idrætscenter, Lerumbakken 11, Nørresundby, on the north bank, and the main hotels are on the south bank, so plan the journey to Skansen and not to the city centre. Lerumbakken is closed to vehicles from 08:00 to 15:00 and parking at Skansen is free but limited. A bus runs from Aalborg station to the sports centre, and cycling is recommended; check the race-morning bus in the journey planner Rejseplanen and leave time to walk from the stop. No free runner transport was found.
Arrive at least 45 minutes before the start with a labelled bag and a dry layer. Bag storage is free and supervised in hall 1, and pacer flags set off at two-minute intervals. Two changing zones each have four changing rooms with showers, two for women and two for men. Food at the event area includes grilled sausages with bread, cold drinks, coffee and ice cream. No throwaway-clothing donation scheme was found.
Nutrition on course
The organiser lists three water depots on the first lap and one at the finish area. All depots offer water and fruit, and at least one has a sugary drink and another provides some salt-based energy. The second lap uses the same depots at roughly 26.5, 32 and 37.5 km, but the organiser does not list second-lap positions. The gap from the last depot at 16.5 km to the lap point is about 4.5 km and the depots are 5.5 km apart, which is longer than usual, so in August drink more than the depots give you.
The brand of sports drink, gels, cups, personal bottles, medical points and toilets have not been published. Carry enough of your own nutrition for the whole distance.
| First-lap km | Water | Fruit |
|---|---|---|
| 5.5 | Yes | Yes |
| 11 | Yes | Yes |
| 16.5 | Yes | Yes |
| Finish and lap area | Yes, separate for finishers and continuing runners | Yes |
Spectating
Skansen is the reliable spectator base, since runners pass it at the halfway point and finish there. A runner on 4:00 pace passes the lap point at about 1:58 and finishes at about 12:40 on an 08:40 start. The course also crosses the fjord on Kulturbroen and Limfjordsbroen on each lap, but a bridge is not a tight transfer route because it can open to boats.
Bus lines, stops, walking times, a tracking app, finish-area access and crowd levels have not been published. Results appear on the organiser's site and the Sportstiming event page.
- Be at Skansen for the 08:40 start.
- Watch the lap point at the halfway mark.
- Stay for the finish.
- Watch the start at Skansen.
- Move to the Lindholm streets at km 3 to 5, which runners pass twice and which are about 2 km from Skansen in a straight line.
- Return to Skansen for the finish with a generous margin.
- Watch the start at Skansen.
- Move to one mapped fjord-side viewing point on the harbour front at km 7 to 13, which runners pass twice.
- Return to Skansen after the leaders pass.
Post-race food
The first food is at the event area at Skansen, where the FAQ lists grilled sausages with bread, cold drinks, coffee and ice cream. In the city, the tourist board lists Restaurant JØRN at the Utzon Center and Brasserie Pascal at the Radisson Blu Limfjord Hotel. JØRN is on the waterfront and can be combined with a short visit to the centre, and Pascal suits a runner staying at that hotel. Hours, menus and Saturday-afternoon availability have not been published, so check the menu and book.
Both are on the south bank, about 2 km in a straight line from Skansen, so plan the journey and allow time after the finish. Do not assume a short walk.
Where to Stay
The start and finish are in Nørresundby, on the north bank of the Limfjord. Aalborg's hotels and restaurants are mostly on the south bank, so the decision is whether to cross the fjord on race morning.
Nørresundby and Skansen
The best place to cut race-morning transfers. Accommodation here is limited and no verified property was found, so check the walking route from any property and not just its postcode.
Aalborg waterfront
The strongest mix of hotels and cultural venues, with the Utzon Center, Musikkens Hus and restaurants close together, about 2 km from Skansen in a straight line. Pier 5 Hotel and the Radisson Blu Limfjord Hotel are here. Expect a cross-fjord journey on race morning.
The central shopping district
Useful for meals and the running shop Løberen. Saturday-night noise on the street you choose is unknown, so check before booking. CABINN Aalborg and KOMPAS Hotel Aalborg are listed in the centre.
Station and Kildeparken
Comwell Hvide Hus stands beside Kildeparken and near the railway station, and suits rail arrivals and departures. The race journey crosses the fjord.
Airport area
Suits a late arrival or an early departure but adds a transfer on race day.
Measured walking distances, weekend rate premiums and noise levels were not available.
Recommended hotels
A budget-oriented base. Compare room configurations, and allow for the transfer to Skansen.
A tourism-listed central hotel. No race shuttle was verified.
Close to the waterfront and the cultural venues, on the south bank.
Has Brasserie Pascal on site. Check street noise and room availability.
Near the railway station. The race journey crosses the fjord.
Booking timeline
Entry is open for 2027 and there is no ballot. Confirm the date and the price on the live entry form, read the transfer terms, enter, and then book a cancellable room. No sell-out pattern or hotel premium was found. August is a busy month for travel in Denmark, so compare the cost of a south-bank hotel plus transfers with a north-bank property, and ask about early breakfast, a refrigerator and late checkout.
Aalborg Airport has bus and train links, and the airport authority refers travellers to Rejseplanen. Recheck air schedules before you book an inflexible connection. If you expect to finish near the limit, ask the organiser how the bridge timing and the six-hour limit interact before you commit.
See & Do
Most of the sights are on the south bank, across the fjord from the finish. Distances are straight-line from Skansen.
Utzon Center
Jørn Utzon's last major building, with exhibitions on architecture and design, and Restaurant JØRN for a seated meal. Check August opening hours.
Kunsten Museum of Modern Art
A modern art museum designed by Alvar Aalto. It is an indoor, level visit that can be kept short on tired legs. Check hours and any late openings.
Musikkens Hus
A music house on the Limfjord, home to the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. Look for a seated performance, since a particular August concert is not confirmed.
Lindholm Høje
A Viking Age burial ground with 682 graves and 150 stone ships, and a museum, in Nørresundby near the race venue. Café Lindholm sits on the hilltop with views over the Limfjord. The ground is outdoors and uneven, so keep it short.
After the Race
Mid-August in north Jutland is long daylight and changeable weather. The four itineraries run from a day in Aalborg to three nights on the Kattegat coast around Frederikshavn. Journey times are left to check against Rejseplanen.
A museum, a seated lunch and a slow waterfront stroll, with the Viking burial ground as an optional extra.
A small Kattegat harbour town with a Renaissance manor and a spa hotel.
The northern tip of Denmark and its painters' museum, with one museum a day.
One base for three nights, with Sæby and Skagen as short rail or bus outings.
