After the Aalborg Marathon: Sæby
The Route: Aalborg → Sæby → Aalborg Airport Logistics: One regional journey to the coast, then a town you can cross on foot. Confirm the transport options for your date. Marathon Month: August Duration: 1 night
Aalborg station ──(train or bus)──> Sæby (1 night) ──(train or bus)──> Aalborg Airport (AAL)
Sæby is a small harbour town on the Kattegat, east of Aalborg, and it asks very little of a runner who has just finished a marathon. The town has cobbled streets, a medieval church, a mill and a manor, all within a short walk of the harbour.
August in Sæby. Mid-August is summer, so expect a busy harbour and beach. Book your room ahead. The weather can turn quickly off the Kattegat, so pack a waterproof.
Getting there
Check the journey on Rejseplanen, the Danish journey planner. Journey times and changes vary by day, so allow a generous margin and book any seat reservations.
Night one: the old town
Stay in or near the town centre. The Hotel Viking Aqua Spa and Wellness has a spa with pools and saunas, and so does Sæby Svømmebad og Wellnesscenter. Both are good for the first afternoon, but check opening hours and any age or booking rules.
The flat walk to start with is the harbour front, which is level and close to the town centre. Sæby Vandmølle, a water mill operating since 1710, stands in the town. Sæby Kirke, a monastery church built around 1470, is a short walk from the centre. The Jernkilden is the iron spring that made Sæby a spa town.
Sæbygård is a Renaissance manor surrounded by a moat, which houses a museum. Check opening hours and the distance from the centre before you go. The Kystmuseet, the coastal museum, is the other indoor option.
A 5 km walking route called Bridges to the Past links nature, art and a thousand years of history. It is too long for the day after a marathon, so walk only the first stretch.
Next morning
Eat breakfast slowly and check the first bus or train. Sæby has glass-blowing studios and porcelain workshops, and some open on the day, so check before you rely on them.
Getting home
Fly from Aalborg Airport (AAL), which the airport authority says is served by buses and trains. Use Rejseplanen, and leave a generous margin before an international departure.
