After the Maratona Internacional de Blumenau: Pomerode

The Route: Blumenau → Pomerode → Blumenau → Navegantes Airport (NVT) Logistics: Car, taxi or private transfer, about 30 km each way. Marathon Month: July Duration: 1 night

Blumenau ──(about 30 km, roughly 40 min)──> Pomerode (1 night) ──(same road)──> Blumenau ──(transfer)──> Navegantes Airport (NVT)

A day trip to Pomerode covers the centre. A night lets you see it twice, once in the afternoon of the first day and once with a clear head on the second. The town lies about 30 km from Blumenau in the Itajaí-Açu valley. It was founded by Pomeranians, and the Pomeranian dialect of Low German is still spoken by a community there and has co-official status with Portuguese under a municipal law of 2017.

July in Pomerode: winter in the valley. Nights drop to around 11°C and afternoons climb to about 20°C in neighbouring Blumenau. Rain is possible. Plan for a layer, a light waterproof and one indoor stop on each day.

Getting There

Take a taxi or private driver on Monday after checking out of the Blumenau hotel. The journey takes around 40 minutes, depending on where you start. Ask your Blumenau hotel to store any bag you are not taking, because you will return to the city at the end. If you are carrying everything, ask the Pomerode accommodation whether it can receive you early.

Night One: Pomerode

Pomerode has pousadas and small hotels in and around the centre. Book one within a short flat walk of the main square and ask about breakfast times and whether the room has a bath, since a hot soak is worth having.

The afternoon is for the centre. A slow circuit of the blocks around the main square takes about half an hour and shows the half-timbered houses, enxaimel, with dark timber frames and white infill. Sit for a long time at a café colonial, the long table of cakes, breads and cold meats that is the town's afternoon custom. Opening hours vary, so ask your pousada which cafés are serving that day.

In the evening, eat close to the pousada. A rich German-influenced meal, such as pork with cabbage and potatoes, is a pleasant reward, and the walk back should be short.

Day Two: The Rota do Enxaimel

The visit association suggests that a full visit to the town and its surroundings needs more than a day, and that is the reason for the extra night. Use the second morning for the route of half-timbered buildings, which is best done by car with short stops. Keep any walking to flat ground, and leave steep tracks and long staircases alone while the legs recover. Check opening days and times for each stop, because small attractions often close on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Getting Home

Return to Blumenau by road, about 40 minutes. From there, the practical airport is Navegantes (NVT), and a paid shuttle connects with Blumenau's centre. Do not book a flight for the afternoon of the return day. Leave a margin for the road and check the shuttle schedule, which depends on flight arrivals.
